Parcel delivered to wrong address

2 weeks ago a delivery driver knocked on the door with a parcel I took a quick look at it saw it had my address on and signed for it. I'd ordered about 10 things that week as doing Christmas shopping excitedly went inside to open and saw though the parcel had eg 34 long drive, in bold the name and pistcode didn't match.

2 weeks of trying to return it. They refuse to give me times lot for collection only between 7am - 7pm 4 times they've come and I've been out as unable to wait in all day though have done my best to be in as much as possible on them days.
Depot is over 40 miles away
They said I can return via postoffice etc at my own expense im don't know what's in it but it's heavy so not wiling to do that.

Have offered to leave it hidden on property they won't accept that. I'm fd up of calling 4 times a week spend a large amount of time on hold etc.

They are threatening me with withholding the goods from them.

How can I get the goods back to them, it's like an elephant in the room sitting beside the front door.
What are my rights can I demand they give me a hour time slot?
Pay postage if I take it too postoffice

They can threaten all they like, sounds like you're being reasonable.

Tell them to send you £x by bank transfer and you will send it back using royalmail. If they refuse put it in storage.

Who is it that you are contacting? If it's the delivery company then they probably don't care that much, they have no contractual relationship with the real customer. You could be better contacting whoever sent it, and if that's not obvious from the outside then you'll need to open the package and find out, hopefully there would be a delivery note.

Yes, you are being reasonable. It really is not your problem and it is not for the sender or the carrier to treat you like a mere customer.

The legal concept which applies is 'bailment' but I will leave you to google this yourself. What I would do is write to both Carrier and Sender, telling them that you have the parcel and you require them to contact you to arrange an agreed 1 hour appointment to collect it within 28 days or pay you up front for returning it, otherwise you will dispose of the goods. Keep copies of the letters and of Proof of Posting

Whether that complies with bailment, I am not quite sure, but you will be seen to have been reasonable.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Cant make out what your saying about the address but is there any info on who it should have been delivered to ?
  • Thank you for your replies. Parcel was delivered by one of the 3 largest courier companies and I'm shocked at there treatment.

The parcel was from a very large online retailer I've contacted there customer service dept but it seems a case of pass the buck and there basically saying they've contacted there courier company to arrange collection

The first line of the address is the same as mine however it's the same road in a different town in a different part of the country. I had considered writing letter to the original recipient but if they came to collect is have no prove of this and how do I know they haven't had a refund etc.

I think I'll write letters to both the courier and the sender and hopefully it'll get something done.

Lesson learnt double check the parcel Address before accepting

Use collect plus then. Put your postcode in and if you've got a local corner shop that does the service tell yodel you'll drop it off there.

    Don't inconvenience yourself though.

And if you do drop it off, get a signed reciept.

Hi, when this happened to me I wasn't prepared to stay in for the collection of the parcels.

I rang the retailer and told them the only way they were going to get them back was for them to send me the required packaging and royal mail prepaid postage labels so I could take them to my local post office.

You have been more than reasonable, it isn't your problem, if they want them back they will have to make arrangements that suit you !!
