happened to me once and the retailer refused to send any pre paid postage or arrange collection. I then just asked for the name of their accounts manager and their address, so i can send then a storage invoice, at this point they just hung up, so i emailed the companies CEO asking the same. I got a reply within an hour by phone from the ceo office apologising and wanting to know when was the best time to collect it.
  • How far away from you is the address that the package should have gone to?
If it's not too far and you can get the intended recipient's phone number from directory enquiries or the BT website, why not phone them and see if they will collect if from you.

If you do this and they agree to pick it up, it would be best to get a signed receipt from them.

Personally, I'd put a request in writing that they either send the funds to cover return postage (and any travelling costs you yourself would incur by posting it back to them) or that they come and collect it.

With the 2nd option, I would include a list of dates/times I will be available for them to collect it, tell them to notify you in advance which date/time they are going to collect.

If they reply back with a time/date and stick to it.....great. If they dont (reply or stick to chose date/time) then at least you have written proof you were being more than reasonable.

Goods sent in error remain the property of the sender, but the return of the goods should be at the retailers expense and at your convenience. Keep that in mind if they tell you to sit in 7am-7pm again.

Thank you for your replies. Parcel was delivered by one of the 3 largest courier companies and I'm shocked at there treatment.

The parcel was from a very large online retailer I've contacted there customer service dept but it seems a case of pass the buck and there basically saying they've contacted there courier company to arrange collection

The first line of the address is the same as mine however it's the same road in a different town in a different part of the country. I had considered writing letter to the original recipient but if they came to collect is have no prove of this and how do I know they haven't had a refund etc.

I think I'll write letters to both the courier and the sender and hopefully it'll get something done.

Lesson learnt double check the parcel Address before accepting

    amazon and yodel
    just name and shame them

The "so what" is that the OP could be held liable for the cost of the goods if they get lost, stolen or damaged.
With goods delivered in error, the person who has theose goods must take reasonable care of them until they are collected and simply leaving them outside your property probably wouldn't qualify.

Not sure why you are going to all this trouble and expense of writing and sending them a letter?

Send them ONE email. Tell them they can collect it between xx and xx on the dates YOU are available. Write "No further communication will be entered into and the item will be disposed of after 14 days."

I don't believe this is legal. After 14 days if they dispose of the parcel they'll probably be financially liable for it.

And if you do drop it off, get a signed reciept.

I have to say I'm impressed with the collection plus service (could hardly believe that it was run by yodel) - they give you a receipt that you can track the progress of the parcel on line
