Hello all you car geniuses!!!!
As you may have guessed I know very little about cars!!!
Recently my cars breaks felt terrible. I took them into Kwic Fit who said that it would cost £586 to fix them, this did include a half service!
They said the parts they would need to get would be:-
-wheel assembly hub
-Bearings
-Stabilisers
-Links
-pads
plus Labour.
Any help or advice on this would be great.
Thanks.
What car and how old? How many miles on the clock? Yes this is expensive but they seem to be saying everything on the axle is knackered. Then maybe not so expensive just far fetched.0 -

If all these things needed doing and you wanted it done quickly then is probably not a bad price, assuming the half service covered all the other things they did not need to check because they had just serviced them.
Whether these things needed doing is another matter. When was the last time it was serviced by a reputable dealer? How many miles ago was this? When was the last MOT? Did the MOT show any indication (advisories) of a developing problem? Most reputable car mechanics will advise that the brake pads while legal are likely to need replacing.
If you had it serviced by a reputable firm and had an MOT a couple of months before I would be very suspicious. If you do all your own servicing and have done 15000 miles since the last MOT I would be less surprised.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Oh dear. Already they're seeing pound signs when you walked in the door. Let me comment below:They said the parts they would need to get would be:-
-wheel assembly hub - Rare to replace - they never break
-Bearings - Possibly - not brake related though (neither is the hub)
-Stabilisers - Not brake related
-Links - I thought this was the same as stabilisers..
-pads - Yes.. brake related
plus Labour. - Never cheap at Kwik Fit
To be honest, you really should get some more quotes and others to look at it. I got quoted £400 to do the front brakes on my car and gotta be honest I thought they were taking the p**. £80 for the discs and £30 for the pads. £290 for the fitting.. seriously?
Nice work if you can get it..0 -

It rather depends on how aggressively the car is driven, how far between servicing and how well its been serviced in the past. If the OP drives like Jeremy Clarkson, drives off road, does his own services or assumes that an MOT and a service are the same thing then maybe this has just caught up with him!Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Thanks all for the responses so far, this website is awsome!
Apologies I should have mentioned the car, model age mileage it would of helped.
Its a clio, 10 years old, 85 k.
All I know is that it was mainly based around the wheel assembly hub (whatever that means!!!) as it had been off for a long time or something to that affect.
They said a new assembly hub will cost around £100 to £200 new.
Can I not get them to show me the parts which are knackered after they have done the work.
I don't think it was just breaks though it was all the other parts which were mentioned above to. They said it was not drivable because the hub (i think it was the hub) could fall off at any time leaving me with no breaks and break fluid leaking everywhere!
Thanks again.0 -

Possibly, but getting a job done by a mate at mates rate (was he competent?) is not comparable to what you might pay at a national chain offering a quick turnaround!:DFew people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. I am not certain but I think that you are entitled in law to see the parts they remove? Someone may know more.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0
