Porridge Oats - Which are best?

  • Gosh I feel old, I remember making porridge before school (if I got up in time) cup of oats and two of water a pinch of salt and a little butter in a saucepan for about 5 minutes, put in bowl with a little milk or evap around the edge and sugar on top to taste - it was good.
Always soak the pot in cold water!!

What's interested me reading this is that not one person has recommended Quaker or Scott's Porage oats.:rotfl:

I must admit, in my effort to debt-bust, I've dropped most branded stuff and now get just own-brand, Aldi / Lidl or sometimes the Value / Basics stuff.

But I've yet to stop eating Scott's Porage Oats.

It's the stuff I've been on for over 40 years.

I think it's the one last thing I've not thought of swapping for a cheaper brand.

The reason? A box does a LOT of portions so I guess I'm thinking what's the point when a single portion costs so little yet tastes so good?

But that completely goes against everything I now stand for in my effort to get out of debt.

I can't remember ever trying a different brand and always assumed it would taste different to Scott's but many people have said on these forums that "oats is oats" and it all tastes the same. Sorry if I'm being a bit ignorant but, is that really true?? The lack of anyone on this thread voting for Scott's has been an eye opener.

Think I'll give the Aldi one a try. And there seems to be a lot of love for the Tesco Value one so might try that too. Could buy both for less than one box of Scott's, I believe.

Will be following this thread with interest. And can anyone tell me, are they really pretty much all the same?? (in which case, why have I been paying 2 or 3 times more than I had to for the past 20+ years??).

I actively disliked Quaker when I bought some a few years ago (sort of too smooth for my tastes a bit like I imagine Ready Brek to be) so I bought Asda SP as it might be rougher/coarser IYSWIM. I was perfectly happy with it and haven't looked back since.

I'd suggest you try a bag and if it doesn't suit then use it up in flapjacks.
  • I use Lidls oats , 39p for 500g last time I bought them . It makes the best porridge IMO . I use 1 cup of oats to 2 cups of liquid , mainly water with just a dash of milk ........ it thickens up nicely in a pan on the hob but I dont seem to get the same consistancy when "cooking" in a microwave . HTHs .

Tesco Value, 75p for 1kg. Cup of water in a pan, teaspoon of Coffee Mate whitener, four dessertspoons of oats, bring to the boil, make coffee, porridge done. For variety I add sultanas, or tinned peaches, or stewed apples, or a banana.

Another fan of Sainsburys Taste The Difference. They have a little more texture when cooked than cheaper oats. It may not be everyone's preference but I like the rougher texture.

Per serving: 1 espresso cup oats, 2 espresso cups water, 1/4 teaspoon salt. 3 mins in microwave, stir, 2 minutes more.

    Works every time.
  • another vote for tesco value, I used soya milk with mine

I used to buy Asda own brand porridge which was lovely but the last time I was in Aldi I bought their own make and have to say it is gorgeous, lovely and creamy, not too smooth or not too chunky and 99p for 1kg.

Aldi oats started off with water and them add milk as I cook on the hot slowly. I don't measure, but just go by feel.

  • After tried so many, my favourite is Waitrose own brand, I think it cost around £1.10
