Porridge Oats - Which are best?

I'm after a bit of knowledge/advice from everyone on here for where I'm going wrong with making Porridge using Rice Dream. When I first started with it on the advice of a specialist who is dealing with some stomach problems I'm having, I couldn't get it to thicken up when cooking on the hob.

Recently I bought some Tesco own brand Oats and this is where the success began. I got lovely thick Porridge, almost like using proper milk. I absolutely loved it and ate it almost every day.

However, when that ran out I picked up a big bag of Sainsbury's own brand Porridge Oats thinking I'd mastered it. I've tried for the last two days now and cannot get the Porridge to thicken up.

How come there is so much difference between the two own brand oats? Where am I going wrong? Obviously the easiest answer is to buy Tesco Oats from now on. I would like to understand why I don't get similar results with the Sainsbury's ones though as it's baffling.

Does anybody have any suggestions of other brands to try which might get me a decent thick porridge using Rice Dream?

No idea what Rice Dream is but the only way I can make a porridge is with pinhead oatmeal. Anything else is for flapjacks.

I thought the thickness of porridge depended on the ratio of oats to liquid. i.e. more liquid = thinner porridge and less liquid = thicker porridge.

Well it does when I make it with cows milk!

    Hi
I use jumbo oats, either Sainsburys Taste the Difference or Jordans as they make a good thick porridge and don't turn to gloop. The secret is to keep stirring whilst it cooks.
  • They do seem to differ. I also get best results with Tesco (value) but have been going there less. Morrisons is OK, as is Co-Op.

Lidl have very cheap oats in a 500g red packet but I don't get such a good porridge from that.

Best way to start the day.

No, this is not so. It definitely depends on what liquid you are using! If I make 50g of oats up with half pint of WATER and pop in microwave for 3 minutes, then the porridge is the perfect thickness. If I do the same but using half pint of MILK then it's too runny! I cannot understand why this should be!

I love the Jordans chunky porridge oats and have yet to try the Sainsbury's TTD yet - looks good though.
I need to get some ...................... the best price of the two wins. :D

You are comparing two different liquids cooked exactly the same. Try making both type in a pan on the hob and cook them until they are done. The one made with milk will take a bit longer but both will end up the same thickness.

However, what will happen if you make one lot of porridge with half a pint of water and another with one third of a pint of water, both using the same amount of oats?
  • I use either Aldi or Morrisons own brand. Both very good
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!
  • I use Jordans Organic big porridge oats called chunky original, with water...twice as much water to oats, on the hob and mixed as it cooks. Beautiful.
