Porridge Oats - Which are best?

  • The recipe I tend to use is 50g Oats, 350ml liquid (Milk or Water) and a pinch of Salt. Cook on the hob until they are done ie thick.

With the Rice Dream (Rice Milk) and Tesco Oats, it didn't take long after boiling to thicken up and it got to a very similar consistency to that of Cows Milk. The same recipe used with Sainsbury's Oats doesn't thicken up.

I've tried adding more oats to the fluid this morning and it still didn't thicken up . So the ratio of Oats to Liquid isn't the problem.

I use Asda own brand every morning, but i don't make up proper porridge with it, i just put a big hand full in the bowl and my weetabix on top. Then cold milk.

I thought the thickness of porridge depended on the ratio of oats to liquid. i.e. more liquid = thinner porridge and less liquid = thicker porridge.

Well it does when I make it with cows milk!
yes, i thought that as well. i use tesco own brand but not the cheap version. best ones i have ever had

I've just had a quick look on tesco and sainsburys web sites at their standard scottish porridge oats.

The instructions for tesco say 50g oats and 300ml milk/water.
The instructions for sainsburys say 50g oats and 270ml milk/water.

So I guess the short answer to why sainsburys doesn't thicken is........ too much liquid.

I always use tesco value ones, about 70p for 1k.
I often use Almond milk to make them and the result is lovely thick creamy porridge.

That's ALOT of liquid! Try twice the volume of liquid to oats. I love my oats so it's one thing I buy the best of.

  • I use one cup of oats to two cups of water and I use what ever oats I can find at the most reasonable price. At the moment I have sainsburys basic ones and they are fine I have never made porridge with milk only water so I really couldn't say.I sprinkle a touch of salt on top and a bit of milk around the edges .I have been making porridge this way for almost 60 years and never had a problem with it .mind my late Mum made it this way as well so I just watched how she made it.:)
I too don't know what rice dream is, I use skimmed milk as I don't like full fat milk.

My favourite is Sainsburys TTD made with half milk and half water plus a bit of salt.
