We took our 3 dd's to Cape Town several years ago, they were a bit older than yours OP, at 17, 14 & 10 at the time but we had an amazing time.

We booked everything separately, rented a gorgeous villa about 20 mins drive outside of the City and hired a car for the 10 days.
We went in August so a bit chilly & wet as that's winter there, so October would be lovely. We spent the entire time sight-seeing, Robben Island, which was the best day we had, Table Mountain, Stellenbosch, vineyards, Cape of Good Hope, it was all brilliant and I would highly recommend it. We weren't worried about crime too much, just took slightly more precautions that you would in any major city.
  • Hi, we visited Ao Nang, in the Krabi area of Thailand in the last week of October a few years back. It was the week before high season, and no monsoon season. I suppose it would depend on when in the month you go. It was the most amazing place to visit. We loved our few night stay on the peninsula of Railay, which you get to on a long tail boat, the kids would love it, and the monkeys on the beach!

It's the stuff of bounty bar adverts, with plenty of snorkelling and finding Nemo. We are not sunbathing people, and found plenty to keep us happy for 10 days, then 3 in Bangkok (though I don't think I'd take kids there).

Wherever you go have a fab holiday.

My vote is for South Africa, spent an amazing 3 weeks there this summer! 2 weeks on safari (Kruger, Swaziland, Kosi Bay and St. Lucia) and a week in Cape Town (not long enough). Food is cheap, the people are lovely and the roads are fab.

Depends what you want out of a holiday really! (Good luck with getting permission to take the kids out of school now btw.)
