From touch control ceramic to touch control induction is no contest, the latter wins every time, the cost difference in terms of purchase is getting smaller by the year, and the savings both in cooking time and in electricity usage, easily outweigh the extra initial outlay. The idea that you have to invest in expensive pans is also a misnomer.

Against gas though, it is less clear cut, as jimi_man points out in his excellent post. Personally, would have induction, though many would still prefer gas, including my wife...so guess what kind of hob we have?
  • A particularly interesting discussion for me as we're about to buy a house that is currently electric only. I love my gas cooker, hate electric but have never tried induction.

So I have a choice to make, we'll be fitting solar panels and heating the house with electric underfloor heating, and probably heating the water with solar too, so the cooker is the only thing I'd be using gas for (gas main nearby so I can get connected) unless I go for induction.

I just need to determine if induction is that good that it's not worth getting the gas connected just for cooking? Gas connection will cost me around £1200, and I guess that would buy me a pretty good induction cooker!

I suppose the answer is that I need to try someone else's and see if I like it.

I/We bought a ceramic hobbed rangemaster cooker (£1500) last year as we had a similar 15 year old Zanussi. What a dissapointment in comparison and we checked the wattages etc of the rings. Go for gas, as i wish we had.

    Ceramic is NOT induction.

    Hence my previous post.

Jimi_me (and others who have replied) - thank you so much for the information, and Jimi especially for the detailed response.

I think I will have a gas pipe extended to cover any potential future installation (or current if I still decide to go with gas).

I must state at this stage, I do hate touch sensitive controls for things like electric appliances (though maybe not for alarm panels and other things that can be programmed) as I can see myself getting irate at having to scroll up or scroll down compared to something "push button" like with instant on and off. The thought keeps coming to mind of when watching a movie on an iphone or ipad and having to move the slider left or right to get an accurate time shift is very frustrating.

  • Another positive vote for induction. Much quicker to cook than gas, easier to clean, and I don't mind the initial extra money for the pans etc. Moving house soon to where there is a gas hob in the kitchen. It's one of the first things I will be replacing as I will really miss the efficiency of the induction.
  • My new induction hob is being wired in tomorrow! I'm previously a gas user and quite looking forward to the change. I'll be sure to add my thoughts here after a few weeks using it.
