Induction hob v gas hob in kitchen

Could anyone with an induction hob please advise whether they have any regrets over buying it compared to a gas hob?

I know the advantage of induction and how it works, but having used gas all our lives, I just want to know if it is more efficient compared to gas and economical?

We will be planning a major renovation so I need to think hard about whether we want to go for this. I always though gas to be cheaper to run than electricity.

    I'm converted had one for two years. Best thing since sliced bread.
    • Easy to clean a quick wipe with a damp cloth no burnt in muck
    • As responsive as gas
    • Gives a nice flat surface for serving or whatever
    • Doesn't get hot (but in reality it does from the heat of the pan)
    • Safer
    • Looks good

    What about the cost of running it? Have you seen higher bills as result of using this compared to gas?

    I've had both and cursed the induction hob every single time I used it and quickly went back to gas.
    .................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

    Can i ask why?

    I am also thinking about getting one - and so far the only downside I have found from people is that some saucepans won't work

    According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the efficiency of energy transfer for an induction cooker is 84%, versus 74% for a smooth-top non-induction electrical unit, for an approximate 12% saving in energy for the same amount of heat transfer.[20]

    Energy efficiency is the ratio between energy delivered to the food and that consumed by the cooker, considered from the "customer side" of the energy meter. Cooking with gas has an energy efficiency of about 40% at the customer's meter and can be raised only by using very special pots,[21] so the DOE efficiency value will be used.

    It's important I get this right because I'm going to build an open plan living area and kitchen and was thinking of not extending the gas pipe to the new area and just go for induction, so I need to be careful what I do.

    Well its 84% effiiciency vs. 40% efficiency. Factor in what you pay for Electric vs. Gas and you'll have your answer.

    Beware of people who say induction is rubbish. 9 times out of 10 the people I talk to who say that are confusing induction with standard electric hobs.

    I've switch to induction from Gas and love it. More controllable, much cheaper and safer to run. Re pans.... you have to make sure they are compatible thats all... as induction works using magnetism.

    Do you ever use a wok or similar shaped pan with a curved base for stir frying etc?

    They can't be used on induction hobs unless you get a very expensive dedicated curved induction unit, and then that can't be used with flat bottomed pans.

    You can still do stir fries in a flat bottomed pan on an induction hob.

    Induction over gas any time
    More modern
    Cleaner
    Simple to clean
    More efficient
    Easier to use

    Looks much, much better in open plan kitchens
    Just fitting mine in my new kitchen
    Had one in the last 2 houses, would never go back to a gas hob, just so impractical to clean and looks so old fashioned
