Seriously? A BMW 535 for track racing? - Bit big and heavy init?0 -
Im not going to be racing. Just driving it around the track.
I did see a bmw 850 but it's up for £3k..0 -
Another vote for small, jap & turbo, impreza, pulsar, evo etc but watch out for mechanical fragility.
For something slightly different with pretty much bomb proof mechanicals try an Audi S4
265 bhp, sub 6 sec 0-60 & 155 mph
added bonus of 4 wheel drive so you can carry on playing in the rain0 -
Much as I love the 535 and 540s, they don't have the same steering system and are a bit vauguer and even in normal use they gulp fuel, suspension bushes, pads and tyres, but that one, for anyone living close, is a high end bangeromic, run it tll it's dead, special.0

MX5 track days are fun.
You don't go that fast, but feel like you whizing along.0 -
You don't need lots of power, just good brakes and suspension.
How about a cheap 1.8 Mk1 MX5, I know where there's one for sale for £600. Use some of the rest for a good brake overhaul with performance pads and a refresh of the suspension.0 -
A non-turbo light car might be more reliable
Take a look at motorsportads.com & pistonheads classified0 -
I put in another vote for a Scoob.
Wether an minty Classic shape or a slightly less minty bug eye.
You might get a high mileage Hawk Eye.0 -

This exactly. If the track doesn't have much in the way of long straight sections then power and top speed is irrelevant especially if it's got soft handling.
You'll have much more fun in a 150bhp lightweight car with good handling than a 300bhp touring saloon.
So I'd be looking at MX-5's, Saxo VTR's, Pug 106 GTI's etc. Enough power to get up to speed, and small enough to have fun with.0 -
For that budget and a fast track car, i'd try and pick up either a good condition MR2, or you might be able to source a Turbo model that needls a little TLC. Turbo models are very quick for the price, but they're less forgiving on the track if the rear end steps outAll your base are belong to us.0
