what's the fastest car I can buy for £2k?

Options
Looking to buy a car for track driving, so as insurance/running costs/etc won't be an issue, what's the cheapest fastest thing available?

Seen a few v12 jags but they are not actually that powerfull.
Any other ideas?

Depends what you mean by fast. A car that will be fun on a track, handle and go well or something that is ok in a straightline but will struggle in the bends (just like your jag)

You could pick up an elderly scooby an MR2 or a Nissan SX200 for that money. SX200 is a fun track car, turbo and rear wheel drive plus easily tuneable.

Still, what do you want to actually do with it?
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • MG ZR160 is pretty quick, and you'd have change from £2k to make it track-ready too. Reliable to boot.

MG ZS180 is also good on the track, 180BHP V6. Again you'd have change.

Both are cheap to fix, pretty reliable and are commonly used on the track. Added bonus with the V6 is the noise... :D

Tiff Needell deemed the ZS the best handling front wheel drive car he'd ever driven. They can scream around a track like nobody's business (I should know... ;) )
  • Basically I just want to drive around as fast as I can until I crash it or it breaks.
I have most of the bits (seat, harnesses, fire extinguisher etc) so it's pretty much just the car I need.

Was thinking of turbo jap stuff as I believe it's pretty easy to chip them up to silly power

200SX would be good then but prices are fairly strong so top of your 2k

Alternatively, quite a few Porsche 944's out there if you are feeling brave.

    Renault 5 lol

Fast, light, easy tosmash to bits so you'll be able to use your fire extinguisher.. what more could you want?

This was my immediate thought, we must be showing our age, a friend of mine used to race in the Renault Challenge back in the day until his missus banned him after he went end over end between the trees in the last days of Ingliston.

Ah those were the days, does anyone remember the 5 litre (?) VW Beetle?

Celica 190 (VVTLi) - will fit in the budget and great fun but will also last quite a bit. try to get one with TTE springs fitted (plenty about) they make quite good track day cars

Get a 944 s2 that has had poor body repairs (the bodies shouldn't rust) and change the belts yourself and have a proper speedbug.

Surely you're on the right lines with Jap turbo stuff. Can 2k get you a shabby Glanza turbo? I'm thinking along the lines above of the renault 5 GTT in that small, light and turbo'd would be the way to go.

This has 245bhp and should be good for around 155mph. They handle well and are very comfortable. About 6.5 to 7 seconds 0 - 60.

I forgot to add, that one of our neighbours had one, and used to do a couple of trips to the Nordschleife each year. I think it used to cost him a bit in tyres though, but he said it was well worth it. He also had a stainless steel exhaust fitted, which made it sound like a real race car. It also had a special induction kit fitted and it was not speed limited.
