I've only attended 2 hen dos. My own, which was actually a hag do (combined hen and stag do) where we had a meal at an all you can eat Chinese buffet, went for drinks at the bar where my husband and I first met and then clubbing. And a friend's, where we went for one of those fish pedicures then out for a meal and drinks. Both under £30. I certainly wouldn't have wanted people to spend too much at my hag do.

I've never been on one of those big weekend away hen dos, which would obviously be more expensive. I think brides who throw those do need to understand not everyone will be able to afford to attend.

I've been on one & now send a £20 note "for the kitty" along with my apologies. Amazing number of friends I seem to have at the wedding as a result of this simple technique.

After the first do, I reckon £20 to get out of it is cheap.

I prefer doing an activity of some kind because it's usually something special you wouldn't do otherwise.

Plus some people might say what's wrong with a night out, but it's easy to spend just as much money on a few drinks as some of the activities. So I'd rather do something a bit different!
  • My original plan for my hen do was to go to a restaurant near where the group lived where the waiters were Elvis impersonators, followed by a few pubs.

Most of group said not coming as not a pub crawl - they all know I don't drink so not my kind of night. Rearranged it to a restaurant near my house had a good night though. Probably cost about £30 each (14 years ago).

I've been invited to a hen do next year, a meal, bingo then nightclub. The hen is well aware I don't drink (she doesn't either) so is quite happy for me to leave after the bingo. No idea of cost atm, but I'm thinking about £100 including petrol.

The corresponding stag do is go-karting, golf range, a curry(bring your own booze), then pub crawl, with transport will be about £100.

I went to a hen do a couple of weekends ago that I had paid £155 (in installments) to go to. I knew it was expensive - shocked me slightly - but I was so chuffed to be invited and really wanted to be part of it, but in the end it was an absolute nightmare. I can't even tell you how awful it was. Never again. Anyway, that involved a spa day including a treatment (to be fair the spa bit was amazing) a terrible meal out and a nights stay in a cheap hotel. And it was nowhere near home, so no escape.

Looking back I realise I had a much better time at the hen do earlier this year where we all staggered to a cheesy local club with a few balloons.

I never understand this - why do you want to go to the nightclub because you don't drink.
I go to nightclubs and pubs regularly without drinking (although I do drink - I often drive on a night out so don't drink those nights)

My budget would be £5 - covering two halves down the local pub and a few bob over to buy the bride-to-be a half too.
  • I can't remember fully but we went to Brighton last year for my friend's hen do, in total I think came to around £150 - we did cocktail lesson, limo around town, lunch out and brunch the next day, cheap (and slightly nasty) hotel.

It was a lot tbh but as Bridesmaid I didn't feel I had much choice..

I did Go Ape for mine - I'd wanted to do it for years but was scared, so I thought if I did it with my mates it would be easier! There were about 20 of us, it cost £20 each including refreshments. A few friends came and just took photos rather than do the activity.
In the evening we went for a meal at a friends restaurant, cost £10 each plus drinks, and she got a late license so we had live music til 2am. About 40 came to this, most ate, some just popped in for a drink. Anyone who would have needed a taxi or lived a distance away walked back to mine and stayed with me. Everyone tells me they had a good time!

A friend had hers at a holiday park, we booked 2 8-berth caravans on one of the cheap weekends, so about £10 each to stay, £5 petrol, £20 food kitty, plus drinks for the drinkers. Did swimming, bingo and evening emtertainment. Much cheaper than some local hen nights I've been on/invited to.
