The other side has nothing in it. It is only a plastic casing. I would have posted a picture but as a newbie it will not let me. :(

Eh? How do you know about the other side? - You didn't post the photos lky2k23 did.

No need for that, you just need to find what I think is that missing transponder chip.

Do you have a second key? If so have you tried it? Did you change the batteries in that at the same time?

Does the dashboard actually light up and if so, I'm assuming the immobiliser light stays on?

Does the central locking still work? - I'm assuming it does but if you can confirm it then that narrows things down a bit.
  • This might sound strange but have you tried using it out of the plastic case ?

One of our remotes ( same type ) stopped working, I was in the car when I fitted a new battery but couldn't get it to resync. After playing with it putting battery in and out pressing buttons it started working but only when it is out of the case. Poor connections are a common problem with these remotes and that's probably what is wrong with ours.

TrickyWicky, I have a spare MG ZR fob on my desk that I have taken apart and photographed. I tried to upload the photograph but the site will not let me post a link to photobucket as I am still a newbie.

Call out the AA. They can be pretty good at this sort of thing.

Did anyone else before opening this thread think 'head gasket'? ;)

No because we're not all misguided moronic sheep. :D

Anyway, on with the problem. I had this in my old ZS, same immobiliser. I'm now blessed with the BMW system in my 75, wish I had this one sometimes! Anyway...

Try turning the key to position 2, and then pressing the left hand unlock button a couple of times. This used to kick the immobiliser off on the ZS when it did the same.
