Laptop death ?

I have a problem with my HP Laptop - it has (overnight), decided to pack up - when booted up - the display is blank (no Boot screen either) and the Caps Lock button is "flashing"
BIOS screen unavailable too (at least not visible)
I have never come across this specific problem before - any suggestions ?
The Brightness key is fully up and besides - if it were a problem with a setting - the Boot screen would still show
Thanks

    Tried that - no difference
I reckon that the BIOS has gone up the creek (although it apparently still tries to boot) - the display has gone !
I have found a troubleshooting page on HP.COM to try

I did and it doesn't really help

The flashing LED on the Caps Lock key just flashes continually and there is NO Nums Lock key !!
The only other LED that is on - is the WiFi LED which remains orange (ie NOT
    connected)
    The HDD is turning though
I have performed a reset and have removed both memory modules and tried them one at a time.
I have tried a BIOS restore too (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02693833&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4315299&tool=)- which fails to do anything - windows + B is supposed to access Tools partition - it fails....(I don't think that that partition still exists (unless hidden - I have rebuilt the laptop using a generic build - 12 months ago)

    No difference
The only thing that I can't do is try an external monitor (No HDMI port on Laptop) also I can't access BIOS to switch to external and also I haven't blown out any crud from vent (No can of air) - though I very much doubt whether that will make any difference...
I think that my 4 year old friend is DEAD !!

I suspect it may be one of the DVxxxx range, these have a known motherboard fault that shows symptoms similar to yours I am afraid.

    What model is it ?

You haven't left an SD card or anything like that in it have you?

As I suspected HP have replied to my email with "Unless covered by warranty - not interested in helping" : or words to that effect !!!
They say to contact PC World - who sold it to me.
So - a replacement is needed
But, more importantly - I need to recover the data from the HDD - Which is a SATA one - will this plug straight in to a SATA connection on my desktop or is it smaller ?
Will an adapter be needed ?
