Can anyone recommend a gift for my 87yr old Granny who although likes to read doesn't do much else...? I have a book about the girls during the Belfast Blitz ready for her... but I wanted to add something else... scarves are too obvious, eyes are to bad for stitching/knitting and my Dad won't let her win at Scrabble so another board game will wind her up...? Or perhaps another one that can entertain them both since my Dad has to stay with her during the week for his work...?
NSK - What about a posh food hamper? like some shortbread biscuits, posh tea, jam? I'm doing something similar for my Nan for Christmas. Was going to do it in the summer for her 90th but went down the cardigan route instead.Feb NST #4

Hey NSK. Bought some stuff from new look in September. Bought probably about £400 worth of clothes whilst in new zealand. (Had to buy a second large bag so I could take everything home).
My plan is to keep the stuff as I am really fussy about what I will wear so the stuff I have bought is stuff that I will wear regularly in the future. I normally send "useless" stuff over to my cousin who then decided what she wants and then sends the leftovers on to a friend. Nearly everything is unworn and still with labels so it is very wasteful.

But this was before my LBM!! So I have no intention of this happening again.Mortgage: £0/£80,329.91

Shyspender I am going to do this for the family to share at Christmas. She will end up letting my Dad eat it all and I just want something for her as I have a hamper lined up for him - he's a big kid really...“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.:eek::eek:........Wowsers! And most of it still has labels on it?? Wow! I am a little shocked but I am glad you have reached that light bulb moment. Goodness knows I need some new threads but am now at the point where I refuse to buy anything unless I know it will last a hem tuck, release, taking in and letting out and 5 years of hard wear...:rotfl:...although I won't be getting anything now before travel...:o“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. LoveaDove What exactly is geocaching? Im looking for a new hobby too
Mrs GSR Glad you made an appointment, hope all went well
ThriftyLass/ NSK I'm glad I'm not the only one to have not spent birthday money or vouchers on personal treats, I have often used them on bills or other people! And if Im honest I have even passed on gifts such as champagne (not a fan) or chocolates as gifts to other people on rare occasions!I think I will probably spend the money given to me by my family on jewellery for sentimental reasons as I live a distance from them.. Or I might just use it on the debt for now and get the jewellery (which will be from them in a roundabout way) in January when I will be in a better position
I have looked at my finances again and edited my signature. Although I owe over £1500 on my loan I also owe £500 on my overdraft. I have deliberately taken advantage of this overdraft facility because I don't get charged interest on the first £500. I have a routine each month where on pay day I work out what is left of my wage following direct debit deductions and I put the whole remainder towards The Debt. I then live off the overdraft because when I see I am already in the red it stops me spending unnecessarily. Since there is just myself to cater for, there have been some 'tight' months where I have survived on under £200! So even though the loan will be cleared before Xmas, the remnants of the overdraft will probably hover until the New Year which I can also live with
Im back in work tomorrow for a few days, lunches to work are mandatory otherwise I would starve or spend an absolute fortune each day!
See ya all later :wave:Ninja Saving Turtle

Ooo I like Geocaching too! I'm absolutely rubbish though but DH is fab! He finds them quickly and then rehides the so the boys can find it too! There is one quite near though we cannot find though v annoying.
Well another nsd today but I am going to have to replace sons chocolate as I needed an emergency fix (I used to hate my mum doing that!). Hopefully he has forgotten about it so I can buy him some more on my next shopping day! Still got lots of milk and lots of fruit so that shouldn't be until the weekend.
On a slight down side I've managed to hurt my back somewhat (old and reoccurring problem) so feeling a little bit sorry for myself and can sympathise with you Mrs GSR.Oct grocery budget £368.40 / 6000 -

Eyeswideopen - did I hear you say CHOCOLATE??
...yes...succumbed to the temptation. I'm partial to any good quality chocolate but go wild for dark chocolate with either praline centre or seasalt and found one of my favourites when getting christmas pressies. I swear it was calling me... It was £2.40 so not too pricey for quality. Obviously not free but I will make it last as a treat over the weekend
Amazing that your so close to finishing off the debt - very inspiring. I also like to hear others paying off theirs in dribs and drabs. Keep it coming!
As for granmothers. I find mine really hard to buy for. This year I will be getting her a book but she is picky with the authors and the stories must not contain any naughty bits! In the past I have given my granmother nice thermal vests (they were lovely, I had a pair for myself also), cardigan and slippers. She feels the cold so these things have been appreciated. She has also had nice thick body lotions and hand creams as her skin is dry (an age thing so may be true of your nan too). Finally had my eyes opened and I am ready to tackle my debts!
