Now reduced to £129 and also, crucially, also now includes Google Play store functionality. 9" HD screen on a par with any 9.7" iPad screen, 16GB internal memory with up to an additional 32GB available by SD card (try that on your iPad!). Buy it from John Lewis and get their standard 2 year warranty.
Only downside? No cameras and no GPS. But to be honest I've had a Sammy Tab 2 for over a year and haven't' taken a pic with it yet.

PS Ignore John Lewis's 'no bluetooth' spec - it HAS bluetooth.
You can even convert it into a quasi laptop AND protect it at the same time for £25!

op did specifically want to skype so really needs camera's though, audio only skype is pretty dull!
I would also point the op at the Hudl, its more than enough for most peoples needs and going to be well supported.0 -

Yes, I must read more carefully in future

Thanks very much for all the helpful advice.
On a couple of specific points, the Hudl uses Android and I downloaded a programme from i-Player. It took rather a long time, but I have watched it (in the UK) so I know it works here and presumably abroad within the parameters. Can I download a film - not from BBC, but from elsewhere?
That's almost what I want but the other way round. I'd like to keep messages on my main computer and just see the new messages on the Hudl. Is there a workaround for this?As for email, I have my main computer set to receive my ntlworld (also Virginmedia) email via POP3 and delete from the server when received. I have the Hudl set to use IMAP on the same account, so it sees new email I haven't read yet, but stuff I have read (on the main computer) disappears from the Hudl. I can reply on either the Hudl or main computer, but unless I bcc myself on the Hudl, will not have any record of the reply on the main computer.Since budget isn't a top issue, then may I suggest this iPad
I've fallen foul of Nook/B&N. I bought a model in the US which theoretically had worldwide access, but it hasn't. Only for US residents though that exclusion wasn't made clear. Nook UK say there is no way it can be adapted for UK use and I don't want two Nooks ...MillicentBystander wrote: »IMHO the current best value tablet deal from a recognised, mainstream brand has to be the Nook ...

On reflection, I have the Skype app on my mobile and will use that on wifi for voice. 0 -

What you say you want is exactly what I described....?That's almost what I want but the other way round. I'd like to keep messages on my main computer and just see the new messages on the Hudl. If you download an iplayer program/film in the UK, you can watch it anywhere in the world within 28 days. So, if you know you're going away somewhere, then download a few shows before you leave.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?

Thanks.
It was the 'delete from server when received' bit that confused me.
I will experiment.
It's only the main computer that does that. The Hudl sees any new messages not yet seen on the main computer. Even before the Hudl, I left nothing on the mail server after receiving it. I like my privacy!
I have another email account, not with VM, which I've set to retain mail for 30 days after it is received by the main computer. The Hudl again uses IMAP on that account, so that it will see all messages up to 30 days old.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Yeah your post is way too vague!! In my opinion buy cheap buy twice! My wife and I both have iPads . Mine is a 2 and hers is a mini. Mine has lasted 3 years and has been perfect and my wife's is a bit younger. Both work beautifully and are a joy to use. If either broke we would replace with iPads again.
Had my iPad 3 for 18 months!
Love it! Love it! Love it!
What network do you use?0 -
for the amazon kindle fire you need the iplayer app and the BBC player app I think it's called. I know it's definitely 2 apps you need.
I know you can watch stuff on iPlayer cuz I was watching the Iceland thingy on my son's kindle fire last night, and he's downloaded the entire Wolfblood series to watch.just in case you need to know:

The current bargain has to be the Kobo Arc 7 at Currys PC World.
Very similar spec to the 2012 Nexus 7, and currently only £69.99 (£79.99 instore and apply for £10 cash back).
Specifications are:
7" 1280x800 IPS screen
Dual core 1.5 GHz processor
16GB memory
1GB RAM
Stereo front mounted speakers
Build quality and screen quality surpass the Nexus 7 2012 in my opinion.
