Without doubt the iPad ..get a refurbished one if you can't afford a new one
It's not just about the money
  • Yeah your post is way too vague!! In my opinion buy cheap buy twice! My wife and I both have iPads . Mine is a 2 and hers is a mini. Mine has lasted 3 years and has been perfect and my wife's is a bit younger. Both work beautifully and are a joy to use. If either broke we would replace with iPads again.

Almost inevitable the iPad and its fans would come into this thread! :)
For business use I would not want to rely on any kind of tablet. Try typing any sort of business document on a device without a keyboard. Also try making use of a tablet if your internet connection is down. There are other items to consider too, but maybe I'm just being old fashioned. ;)

We bought a Tesco Hudl. At the price and using Clubcard points, it seemed rude not to.

Our main use will be when we travel outside the UK if it means we don't need to hump our laptop around. I know it's wifi-only so we won't be able to use it with a SIM. I assume we can use apps such as e-newspapers and radio but not TV. I assume we won't be able to use i-Player and similar without preparation.

I have a couple of newbie questions.

    - How easy is it to watch films? Do I have to download films in advance and where is best to dowload from?
    - Can I download programmes from i-Player while at home and watch when away within 30 days?
    - We get too much e-mail to our normal e-mail addresses and don't want to use too much memory for reading e-mails. Is there a way of filtering for new messages only when we are away? I use virgin.net who use google.com, and we both have our own domain and addresses via 1&1.

    Many thanks!

I have a Hudl and although I've watched programmes through iPlayer on it, I haven't tried downloading them for future viewing. Assuming you can do that, you might want to get extra memory for it.
As for email, I have my main computer set to receive my ntlworld (also Virginmedia) email via POP3 and delete from the server when received. I have the Hudl set to use IMAP on the same account, so it sees new email I haven't read yet, but stuff I have read (on the main computer) disappears from the Hudl. I can reply on either the Hudl or main computer, but unless I bcc myself on the Hudl, will not have any record of the reply on the main computer.

Since budget isn't a top issue, then may I suggest this iPad

I have a tablet and as far as I can figure there is no "download" facility from BBC iplayer for tablets.
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

Here's a list of devices that will support download functionality for BBC TV programmes from launch:
    1) Amazon Kindle 8.9
    2) Asus Nexus 7 i
    3) Asus Nexus 7 ii
    4) HTC One
    5) LG Nexus 4
    6) Samsung Galaxy S2
    7) Samsung Galaxy S3
    8) Samsung Galaxy S4
    9) Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7"
    10) Samsung Google Nexus 10
    11) Sony Xperia Z (phone)
You may have noticed that despite their popularity, the Amazon Kindle Fire 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7 are not in this list. We are currently working with Amazon to try to resolve this.

Been playing around with my Hudl....

It does offer the option to download programmes from BBC iPlayer (in the details below the programme) and then will play it offline. You have 30 days to watch or 7 from when you first view it. Not sure where the programme is stored, it just takes up some of the "apps" space on the storage report.

I also transferred a short mp4 video from my computer via google drive. Had to install a free App to play it back on the Hudl, but it worked fine.

That's only the list of tablets running Android - other operating systems do exist!

Here's the complete list, including phones, and the various operating systems:
