You approach makes no sense whatsoever.
All tablets have "email, websites, face book , skype ETC", most on WiFi only.
Requirements "good"/"good screen" and "not too expensive" are far too vague and contradicting.

    Your have either to
set the budget and look for the best tablets for this price
    or
set specifications and look for the best value for money for given specs.

OH has Kindle Fire HD and loves it. I have a Tesco Hudl because I was curious and had a load of vouchers I could use for it. The Hudl is an impressive piece of kit for the price. Doesn't replace a "real" computer IMO, but is very handy. Both the Kindle and Hudl rely on there being Wifi available. When we go abroad, we always make sure we get a place with Wifi, which isn't difficult these days.

Define your requirements first, they're too vague as they stand.

I bought a cheap Chinese tablet off ebay last xmas or was it the one before?

Its quite good and a bargain for under £40. Bit of finger crossing needed when buying though, Probably cost more to return it than you paid.

    So a throw away item.

I love the kindle app. Why buy a kindle that fails after 13 months and have to buy another?

Battery life, Well it wont last anywhere near as long as a kindle :)

5 hours of fairly heavy use though.. Longer if your just reading or browsing the web.

Carphone Warehouse half a half price offer on at the mo for a 7" tablet, which I'm considering buying. Can't remember the make but the price is £49, think the offer ends on 4th November, have a look on their website if you're interested. I only want one to use for a specific purpose (my business) so you might have other considerations to take into account.

I know absolutely zilch about technology so if anyone with more experience cares to comment please do!

Slower processor, lower resolution and less memory than a hudl, but less than half the price. If you treat it as a disposable item, then a pretty low risk way to dip your toe in the market and get an idea how an android tablet could be of use to you.
