Brand new laptop - Setting up

Hi

I am setting up my new laptop, had Windows 8 taken off and Windows 7 Prof installed instead. I am trying to get this up and running and its slow!

I had downloaded AVG & Zonealarm. Funny feeling these weren't the best . Any help appreciated please :)

Downloaded but not installed I hope.
Avast would have been a good place to begin. Do you actually need a separate Firewall?

If you think so, then why not spend the £4 or so on Kaspersky Internet Suite 2014?
Download the Trial version and if you get on with it, purchase the licence before the Trial ends.
  • Hi
Yes I did download it :( I wonder if I did a system restore as I have only been working on this for a few hours now??

Nothing lost if I start again?

There was Avast icon on, but I didn't realise what it was..I am useless!!

    Make model, processor, memory?

EDIT: "There was Avast icon" just to check - you haven't got Avast AND AVG ?!

That shouldn't be slow (but I think you knew that!). Unless you've got multiple anti-virus intalled, or perhaps windows is installing lots of updates, or perhaps you haven't got the right drivers I'd restore back to 8.
  • Back to 8 is out of the question, a guy has changed it for me to 7

I will try restore? Argh... I hope I don't mess this up lol

That's easy then. Get the "guy" to sort it out;) Or persist here... e.g.

    Ctrl-Alt-Del
Start Task Manager -> Check "show processes from all users" -> order CPU column to show highest number at the top.
    What's taking most CPU?

How did the Avast icon get on there? Did someone already install that for you?

    So, start uninstalling.

    AVG Remover

    ZoneAlarm Uninstall Tool
  • Ok, lets sort it :) (I cant afford that guy to look at this!)

    The top CPU is
    system idle process 98%
