  • Well one time a Tesco employee asked me what I meant by "groceries" so maybe you got the same person and they're just daft!

To cover a couple of points.
A lot of things a none Tesco person would class as groceries Tesco do not. It is one of their departments and not everything that you would class as groceries is in that department.

As for the 4p item. It is cleared to zero, this means that the stock have been written off by head office and the store needs to remove them from sale and either destroy them or return them. It can be for a number of reasons. The item could be on the shop floor for a number of reasons, the instruction has just come down from head office or it might have been missed when the rest were removed.

The lady on the till was correct that she couldn't sell it at a higher price, as the tills simply would not allow it.
Its the store policy not to sell items that are marked down at such a low price, so she was just doing her job, not being awkward at all. The cashier who just puts it through can run the risk of being fired (there was someone in the store i worked out who was fired for something simlar).

i dont think its really fair to ask the cashier to risk thier job so you can get a bargain.

as for the illegal comment, this is not all that surprising really, tescos train thier staff as if store policy is actually the law, so it would be very easy for them to believe it was actually illegal.
  • I picked up a set of 3 babygros in Tesco as they were marked at half price for £3. However, they scanned at 4p and the supervisor said if that's what they scanned as then that would be the price I was charged......was totally amazed at my bargain buy.
  • official word from tesco csa who has replied via email and also offered a £10 voucher. personally id rather the supervisor in Banbury had a disciplinary and some retraining!

"I can only agree that the way in which this was handled in store was certainly not what I would have expected, especially from a more senior member of staff. While there are occasions when discontinued products go beyond the "reduced to clear" period and their value is reduced to a penny on our tills, staff should be removing these from sale. However, if one of our customers find themselves at the checkout with one of these products then we would allow the sale to take place.

Our view, like yours, is that it is better these items are sold. I am therefore very surprised that the supervisor who served you did not allow this sale to go through. Similarly, I would like to reassure you that what you she told you about these items being disposed of is not wholly correct.

Since 2011 Tesco has had a national agreement with Cancer Research UK that all discontinued or 'clear to zero' products should be donated. Each store has a contact with their Cancer Research Area Manager who can be in store approximately once a month to collect any products. Also, when a major 'clear to zero' happens and the volume of stock discontinued goes up, Cancer Research are informed and collections are more frequent. I trust this reassures you on this point."

would seem your wrong about everything. if you work for tesco i think you need to do some homework before posting your comments here :p
  • I went to tesco and got a couple items from the 'bargain bin' when I took them to the till I could see they wouldnt scan as either the yellow reduced sticker was rubbed out erasing half the barcode or there was some kind of goo from another product in the same reduced bin having leaken on them.

I pointed this out to the cashier and she said she would agree on a price the item reduced label was actually advising the reduced price as £1 and £5 for the goo product but as I mentioned I was genuinely buying them for a charity lucky dip bucket (whch I was going to clean them up obviously) she was kind enough to reduce them to 4p for the 2 items. I did wonder if it was because we are almost daily shoppers in there or if she was genuinely wanting to help as it was for charity. None the less I did feel a bit guilty even asking for them to take it into consideration!
Failure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.

    Not really, actually.

Nowhere did tesco say that they DO in fact allow their staff to increase the price directly through the POS system.

The tesco rep did say that these goods should be removed from sale -- which is in line with what Cycrow said.

The difference is that this individual says that if goods get missed, then there's no problem with customers buying them.

If cycrow and the person who served you had received orders from a manager that the goods should be removed from sale, it's not a small leap to imagine how management may misinterpret that as a mandate not to sell under any circumstances and discipline staff who sell the goods.

The disciplinary write up may not have been issued correctly, but that won't help a staff member much if they do get fired because of it.
