I just wanted to say how very sorry I am to read of what happened. It seems to me that your daughter had great presence of mind in her reaction to what happened and in my opinion you did the right thing for poor Daisy. I suspect at the moment you are all thinking of the 'what ifs' . I hope that in time you will have happy memories of your time with Daisy and know that you did the right thing.0

I'm so sorry to hear about this. It must have been so scary for your D, great presence of mind to tie Daisy up rather than just drop the lead.
I disagree with tryingeveryday, whatever the reason, which a vet may not have been able to identify anyway, you need to look after you D and your family first.
You gave Daisy love and care through her life, think about the good times with her and just accept that sometimes things go wrong and they are out of our hands, there is no point in wondering if things could have been done differently.0 -
Trying to imagine this happening with Zara and my own daughter and thinking what I would have done?
As hard as it may sound, I would want the vets to examine the dog before deciding what to do.
Especially a dog I had from puppy and a dog who has never shown any aggression towards its family.
Really sorry OP.0 -
Just typed a long post and promptly lost it, rubbish ipads.
To the op who thinks i should have had loads tests ect then no way, she was snarling in the vets at dd and anyone who was there,
Im a mother first and dog lover second. Vet said she would probably do it again, 8 bites and a coat ripped to shreds make you lose your trust completely. I do not for one second regret my decision, but we have 2 things to deal with, the loss of our beloved daisy and the knowledge of what happened the last day.

OP, just to say how sorry I am for you and DD. It must have been awful and such a shock. If there was genuinely no warning from a previously happy and family friendly GSD then I would assume there was a major health issue such as a brain tumour. You did the right thing to have her PTS straight away- further investigation or delay would have been unfair to her- who knows what pain and distress she was in to cause such an extreme behaviour.0

Arlybarly - I am not criticising your decision.
I am just saying mine would probably be different.
You have done what you felt was right xxx0 -
On that advice from the vet and Daisy's behaviour even after the initial attack? I think I would have sadly done exactly what the OP did. But nobody can know for sure unless they've been in that situation.
Other people may have differing opinions but personally I think its unbelievably unfair and cruel to air them on this thread when this has just happened and no doubt arly and daughter are still very emotional about it.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

I can see both sides. I can see why you did it but I would also probably have taken a bit longer to think it over. I realise it was a knee jerk reaction as you didn't want her back, had nowhere for her to go so it was the simplest decision.
Although saying that it's not for us to judge and it is history now so criticizing any decision doesn't help anyone.0 -
Vets are not behaviourists - to make statements that dog "will do it again".
Something has triggered that awful attack, no question about that.
End result - poor girl bruised from the attack and poor dog alone, obviously unwell for whatever reason being put down by a vet by herself, scared and poor OP having to deal with all and pick up the pieces.
Terrible situation for all involved

OP, you did the right thing.
You could not possibly take the chance that Daisy might flip again and attack even more seriously.
Whatever happened in her mind, you have a duty to keep your family and others safe.
Heartbreaking though your decision was, it was a decision that had to be made.0
