Chrome is a much quicker browser than IE, on slower machines especially.0

From Microsoft's own web site: "Support for Windows XP is ending on April 8, 2014.". There's no need to panic yet.
April 9th is when all the malware that's being held back gets launched. Time to let the wonderful but past it XP retire to the sunshine happy home to watch birds on the lake.
Machine needs a flatten and rebuild for sure, if it's XP era then frankly it'll have clogged up, be underpowered, and hardware failure is on the cards. Chuck a small Linux build onto it in the meantime, and start saving for a modern computer.0 -
More likely the OP's comp is full of crap. A good malware clean, registry clean, update (if necessary)Anti virus sweep and reduce programs running at startup will work wonders for an old machine. Our 5yr old Dells run pretty well on XP, may be underpowered but what does this mean? if it runs the necessary progs fairly well then its not underpowered ecept by comparison to a new machine on 7 or 8. These both need oodles more memory than XP. Its possible the OP's machine has just the basic memory which was ok when XP came out but with all the updates, service packs etc it could possibly do with a memory transplant. The hard drive might be full and slowing it down. There are umpteen reasons for slowness, they just need to be worked through.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Since the problems you describe are when web browsing, why do you think it's the Operating System that's at fault, and not the Web Browser?
I was having similar problems recently with Chrome (I also use XP) and I fine-tuned the browser with the help of info on the web and other forums. I'm running fine now.0 -

I've seen this suggested elsewhere, that all the virus writers are sitting around, doing nothing until 2014 when they'll all strike.
Do you have any evidence to back this up, other than speculation and/or hearsay?0 -

Nothing to do with the operating system then, something has changed, undo that, it will be fast again

I won't be upgrading XP for another 10 years (unless my Bank prohibits it's use)
Bear in mind that vulnerabilities are often cross-platform. As an example, the latest IE vulnerability affected Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 on XP, Vista, 7, 8 and server platforms.
From April next year, these vulnerabilities will only be fixed on Vista onwards and leave XP open to attack.
Anyone who stays on XP after April is simply asking for trouble.0 -

No, otherwise there would be little point in windows updates if gaping holes in .net runtime and activex controls could be fixed quickly by av companies.0 -
Echo the other comments - a full format and re-install of XP will make a MASSIVE difference.
Also has the added benefit of leaving you with a nice full backup of all your data.
With XP, I used to do this about once a year. Takes about an hour to get back up and running, and an hour or so spread out as you realise bits and bobs need downloading and installing.0
