I take it your machine won't support Windows 8. If it does, and you are a Uni student, you'll probably be able to get Windows 8 for free from Microsoft.

In the first post the OP stated that they don't want Windows 8

Don't forget, MS has now ceased support foe XP so no more patches or fixes.

Linux is worth a try & with various 'fixes' installed, works just like W7.

Shame really. Once you've worked out how to do stuff and the excellent short cuts (probably a few days use) its fantastic, even on a non touch screen PC. Some people are either just too impatient or see some bloke moan about it on the internet and decide to adopt their opinion as their own too without using it properly.

Are not the fixes up till Easter? Anyway, it would probably be a pain to transfer all Uni work to a totally different OS.

I agree, never had any problems even after upgrading to 8.1. I also agree too may lapdogs on the internet that when 1 person says they hate it a lot just follow them using the same opinion rather than check win 8 out and give their own opinion. I have even seen on MSE where members say they hate win 8 when they have not even used it.

How much memory do you have - could be a victim of "creeping software bloat" (alt/ctrl/del for Task Manager to check memory usage v available).

I'm tearing my hair out with frustration! I am a student and send my documents to my lecturer and she sends me and the rest of the class links with pages to view. I have Windows XP home edition, when I first had it it was great; now I !!!!!!!g hate it!

It's slow and unresponsive, often the page crashes when I click on the links, or comes up with 'not responding' or 'kill pages'. I feel like killing XP and going to seven. I don't want eight as it's terrible. Has anyone else had problem with XP (Xtra pain in the !"£$%!)

What browser are you using? The newest version of IE possible with XP is too old for most sites to run properly, so if you're going to stick with XP you have to use FF or Chrome.

From Microsoft's own web site: "Support for Windows XP is ending on April 8, 2014.". There's no need to panic yet.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Hopefully the OP may come back to see what is happening, until then We are in the dark.
