I'm tearing my hair out with frustration! I am a student and send my documents to my lecturer and she sends me and the rest of the class links with pages to view. I have Windows XP home edition, when I first had it it was great; now I !!!!!!!g hate it!
It's slow and unresponsive, often the page crashes when I click on the links, or comes up with 'not responding' or 'kill pages'. I feel like killing XP and going to seven. I don't want eight as it's terrible. Has anyone else had problem with XP (Xtra pain in the !"£$%!)

You may well find that re-installing XP will bring it back to working order. It gradually clogs up with all sorts of junk and suffers the problems you have mentioned, above. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Hi I havent got a back up disk for it I don't think and i wouldn't know how to do it anyway. i have pressed control alt and delete five times already today. Roll on seven!
How do i clear the junk please?0 -
Have you too many programs running at start up? Check task manager. If so use ccleaner to stop any you don't need at startup.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Unfortunately, it's not at all straight forward. A lot of junk is in the 'registry' and tools that claim to clean that often do more harm than good.
Unless you can get a very knowledgeable friend who is prepared to spend a lot of time on your machine I'm afraid you may well have to wait until you can afford W7.
You could try asking in a dedicated computer forum for advice on registry cleaning but make sure you have all important data backed up before you try anything. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
I used XP and it just became slow to the point of being unusable, so I took the plunge and started using Linux. I haven't looked back since.0

I use Eusing Reg Cleaner to get rid of junk alternatively Ccleaner will do the same, if not quite as well.
I suggest a trip to the techie forum for more help.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
For under £15.00 you can get XP Professional Edition with a serial number. I've had XP for over 9 years and it boots up in under 30 seconds and is trouble free. I have fine tuned the startup and use free software to clean the registry. My Dell 2400 runs better now than in Feb 2004, when I bought it.
I use IE 8 and don't have any problems on any websites I visit. From past experience using FF or Chrome will slow down your PC. I won't be upgrading XP for another 10 years (unless my Bank prohibits it's use)0 -
Do you have the licence key sticker on the machine, if so recovery disks are readily available or images downloadable.0

Are you up to SP3? or just the original one when you bought the machine?I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

I take it your machine won't support Windows 8. If it does, and you are a Uni student, you'll probably be able to get Windows 8 for free from Microsoft.0
