I think it's a nice idea - I did this too. I agree that if you have time then why not? I included pants, socks, t shirt, deodorant, water, flapjack bar things. I did not include bl**dy playboy! I assume (hope) that was a joke....

Also our hospital had a rule about only allowing Speedo type trunks in the pools rather than flappy short ones.

I do wish we'd discussed how to let people know though - DS arrived in a bit of a hurry (and so we never actually used most of the stuff I'd lovingly packed!) but DH texted my mum to let her know...she was not impressed!
    Good luck with it x

I would suggest a pack of paracetemol (for him, or you, as needed).

Yes this! Now don't get me wrong my husband is a good man but when one of ours was born there I was all proud but worn out and very sore and the man starts to complain about what a terrible headache he has! It annoyed me if I am honest, okay he may well have had one but I had just given birth and he was annoying me with his whining!

The hospital shops were all closed and they were not supposed to give medication to non patients but the midwife took pity on him and sneaked him a couple through.

Also something to entertain him if you have a sleep,it gets boring for the father or any other birth partner waiting it out especially when there is nothing they can do or you don't need anything for a while.

Depending on the time of day he may not have had much sleep either so if you do get some he might want to grab a nap as well,i would think about taking in a comfortable pillow for him.

Wouldn't it be easier if he just waited at home?

A little note telling him to enjoy the last time he will be treated like a kid!
You will have your real one from then on.

This is one occasion where packing a large bottle of scotch or brandy should be near-essential!

Will be keeping an eye on this thread as our little one's due in December.

Whatever you are packing, get it packed early. Ours came 3 weeks before due date, with the missus > 130miles away when her waters broke!

A camera if it hasn't already been suggested? Sometimes camera phones are not the greatest pictures?

  • if you are planning a water birth make sure he gets out of the water before you get to pushing stage...it will be like a scene from jaws when baby emerges...i am speaking from experience.!

    We had a water birth.

The only things we needed were:

Mobile phone (with all the contacts to inform people),
Lucozade (To keep energy levels up)

and that was about it to be honest. You obviously need the items for baby (nappies, car seat, clothes etc) as well as some things for mum (change of clothes / hair brush etc), but taking anything else for us just took up too much room and created stress worrying about remembering anything.

As a man, I was too busy assisting my wife giving birth than being able to read / listen to music etc

We were only allowed one over-night sized bag when I had DS1 a few years ago, so had to completely re-pack my bags and the one for OH, to fit the absolute essentials in, and have the rest in a spare bag in the car for OH to go and get when/if needed.

The hospital told us this is the norm at some hospitals, so have you checked you can take an extra bag for your OH?
