Go back into the BIOS and Disable D2D Recovery

But before you do, have one more go at holding down the ALT key as soon as you turn the machine on and whilst holding it down pressing the F10 key.

If that doesn't work, Disable D2D Recovery.

Then it may allow you to boot from optical disc.

    Sending you a PM.

tried F10 with Alt key just brings me back to the Safe mode options screen.

Do not understand the disk problem or is it a laptop problem?

When got laptop I was advised to take copy of system and he sold me these disk.

I'm not going to bother with it anymore and will go to have a look for new laptop, as the windows installer is corrupt anyway.

many thanks for all your help everyone

    He sold you discs??

Seriously, it's an easy issue to fix. Seems that you give up easily.

It just needs a simple reinstall of the OS.

If you are going to give up then remove the hard drive and pass it on to someone who can simply replace the hard drive and reinstall the OS.

I would happily pass on such a machine on to a charity or youth club. Ridiculous to scrap it.

I'll get a new laptop but still keep this one.

Then I can spend more time on it when not under so much presure, and try and restore it back to factory or change the hard drive.
    Thanks

To reiterate, I doubt very much if there is anything wrong with your machine, other than a corrupt windows installation or profile

So, the cure for that is to stick a windows installation cd in, boot from it, and kick off the windows reinstallation, and go make a cup of tea, an hour later it will be a fully working machine

The only thing stopping you doing that right now, is either lack of knowledge or keypress timing on booting from a dvd, or lack of the correct dvd, nifty is offering to resolve that if you are unable to run the create dvd and drivers function using erecovery inside windows.

ALT F10 would have been the easy way to get the machine going, but it does depend on 2 things, correct keypress timing at boot, and having a windows recovery partition intact. On some vista systems, recovery is initiated using F8, then advanced.

The chkdsk checked the integrity of the hard drive, not the dvd. The way to find out what is on the dvd is to look at the contents in explorer, it could be blank, it might not be an acer recovery dvd, it could be windows backup, so look whats on it.

It's possible that erecovery from windows doesn't work properly due to the fact you are in safe mode, that is another possible avenue of exploration, both to do the recovery, and to create 2 discs you need to factory restore, the windows disc and drivers disc.

If the machine is second hand, or has been wiped before it's possible the factory restore partition has been deleted.

it will wipe out all your data, and extra programs, but you hinted there is nothing important on the machine

So you are about an hour away from a working machine, if you stick at it. Which is quicker and cheaper than buying a new one.
