create the recovery disc using acer erecovery

have you tried using erecovery from windows to initiate factory restore (after backing up your data)

    what exactly happens

have you tried F8, system restore

how did they decide it was a hardware problem

you can fix these things yourself without paying them £55

Putting a disc in doesn't initiate a reinstall, even if it's the correct one, you have to boot from it.

Have you backed up, or got anything to backup?

Have you not got access to any other machines?

It's a big jump for them to diagnose a hardware problem from the fact factory restore doesn't seem to activate by using ALT F10

    Still missing answers but nevermind.

There should be a windows program called erecovery, ie the program you used to create the windows disc, on acers this is usually called erecovery, so if you find it, and run it, does it

    a) allow you to create windows discs
    b) allow you to create driver discs
    c) allow you to initiate a factory restore, from within windows?

you said you've put a disc in, what exactly did you do then? because putting a disc in, doesn't actually do a thing

have you got another machine available. how are you on the net now, if only in safe mode?

Which operating system is installed on this machine?

Have acer asked you to do a disk diagnostic?

The disc may have nothing on it, have a look

    start, run/search -

    chkdsk c: /R

    ok

    reboot

the disc doesn't do anything from inside windows, you have to boot from it, that means switch the machine on, with the disc in - you may have to also press F12 a second or so after switch on.

please answer questions in post 24 fully

Yes I have an Acer Aspire 5735 which has lasted 3.1/2 years, the hard drive has problems, and it will only work in safe mode, so need new laptop.

will go to J.Lewis to see what is aviable, many thanks for your replys

If it starts in Safe mode, the hard drive is still working.

You can simply reinstall the OS using the/a Recovery Disc, but you have to install from Boot. You don't appear to have grasped this fact.

You should switch the machine off completely. That is off, not sleeping.
Switch it on using the Power button and press and hold the F12 key just after you do so. That should take you to a Boot Menu.
If it doesn't, you have to repeat that action, but this time press and hold F2 key.
That should take you to the BIOS setup screen, which will enable you to enable the F12 Boot Menu.
Once enabled, you'll have the ability to reinstall the Operating System.
Still a decent spec for a laptop.

Ok disk took ages to read but seems to be there, have 2 disks put in 1st and it said verifying 5 stages 1st stage with 164208 files
last stage verifying space of 42746632
when 100% completed came out, so quess that the disk has all the details needed.

Tried F12 nothing just bleeping sound

Got into F2 into boot but not sure what to do next
had 2 options which seemed to link with disk.

    No 2 said cd/dvd slimline

Is that from the Boot options?

Make sure that D2D Recovery is Enabled too.

    start, run/search -

    chkdsk c: /R

I did this with disk in, I'm guessing this has just read the disk to confirm disk has info on it, if so then yes it does have info on it.

Have gone into Main D2D Recovery and it is already enabled,

I can now get into F2 and or F12
But still don't know how to RUN disk to go back to factory

    this is vista home system

    I know...Vista Home Basic.

I don't know if the ACER Recovery disc you have is Bootable. If not, I can send you a Recovery Disc...

What you do is to restart the laptop(with the Recovery Disc inside the drive), hit F12 on restart and allow the CD/DVD drive to be the first to Boot.

But... we won't do that right now, as you may wish to make some preparations beforehand. Like downloading Essential Drivers before hand, such as the ones needing for Internet connection after the OS has been installed.
You won't need them for your Recovery Disc if it works, but you would for mine, as mine won't contain any Drivers.

Do you have a USB Flash drive to hand?

chkdsk has nothing to do with the Recovery Discs. It is to check the integrity of the hard Drive.
