New laptop needed

Hello There,
I need a new laptop, but have to use a traditional mouse with it as I know I'll never use a touchscreen, or touchpad.

The only other info I'm sure about is that I want 14" or 15.6" screen and i3 or i5 Processor.

I have around £400 to £550 to spend, there are new company's out there that I've never heard of, eg Asus and Lenovo have no idea if they are any good.

I only use it for browsing Internet, Email, and storing a few documents and photo's.

Would be greatfull for any advise
many thanks

On a thread nearby I've suggested an HP. Any laptop can use a traditional mouse (as long as it has a USB connection).

Good companies? All budget laptops (£300) are the same. It may last 1year (claim under warranty) it may last 3 years (claim under SOGA) or it may last forever (unlikely these days; they don't make them like they used too...)

Above £300 you may wish to look at business oriented laptops (may be more reliable). I'll let others suggest the best makes.

PS. The HP one I pointed you too is a business variant which MAY be more reliable than the standard HP stuff. Cheap HP laptops don't have a great reputation, but, as I said before, what budget laptop does?

Thanks for the info, is an ultrabook the same as a laptop, I don't want to download app's want an ordinary laptop, not sure about all these new systems. it has to be secure so will want to use Avast security on it.

sorry if my questions seem daft but in my late 60's so hard to keep up with all this new tech.
    Thanks
  • I have the Lenovo Z580 and love it - I only use for browsing and enter competitions!, email and documents
Its quick easy and easy to use
Im not sure mine is still available but johnlewis have plenty to look at as well as other makes and this will help you decide
when I was looking I just didn't like some makes layout and the 'material' the mouse pad was made from.
I too use a mouse most of the time - just get a usb wireless one which are great

It doesn't have a CD/DVD drive (apparently people don't need them these days!) If you need a CD/DVD drive they are a cheap addon from ebay (£10-£15).

EDIT please ignore my Tesco suggestion (unless it appeals). I was trying to reply to the guy who wanted a touchscreen and 14" but I replied to the wrong thread. sorry,.

you could probably fix that in 10 minutes, by doing a backup and factory restore, or even a system restore, so if that's the only reason you want a new one, you may as well try it.

Even if the hard disk is faulty, which I doubt based on what you've said so far, a new one costs around £40

cannot get into acer recovery management to do factory backup, spoke to Acer about this they said do Alt F10 and still not able to get in it, They said hardware problem. Cost £55 just to return it to them then £??? to pay for fixing it, so feel it is not worth it.
