Dreading Halloween...

Bloody hell I'm only 25!
Not nice. I have been reading the posts and I have never thought of Halloween that way before. We always go to a party so are never in.
And hey 25 or 9995 being made to feel unsafe in your own home is not good. that should be the one place that the world can not affect.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -
I have no problem with the little ones even though they have no manners. It's the gangs of 15-18 year olds in hoodies when I'm home alone, and the way they've acted last year!0

I don't mind the small children who come by with a parent and take some sweets but I do object to small children with no parent in sight or much older 'children' complaining that it isn't money we are giving.
This year we are going out,we will leave a carved out pumpkin by the door with sweets in it and a sign saying 'please take a few',is that an option for you OP?
Could you arrange to visit a friend or go out for the evening? It would beat being home alone scared of the door going.
We have only ever taken our children to homes of people we know and we know will be okay with it but the past couple of years we have not done it at all.0 -
Simple answer:
Don't take part.
Don't open the door. I won't be!
Halloween isn't a festivity that you MUST take part in.
In fact, Leicestershire police made some nice little posters asking people not to call.

Not sure how it went down with the neighbourhoods but a good start I thought.0 -
I usually enjoy halloween as round here the kids round here are relatively polite.
This year I have moved house though and my garden path is too dark and dangerous to have groups of kids trudging up it. Also, the dog is going to get very stressed with people coming up the path. My plan is to put a pumpkin at the entrance to my gate, with a sign saying 'sorry, no trick or treaters. happy halloween' and a tin of sweets for them to help themselves to.
Last year I made cup cakes, and when they knocked at the door I asked how many of them there were and gave them a cupcake each. Stops them snatching more than their share!
It does sound like I am lucky though with how nice the kids round here seem.0 -
I used to like guising when I was a kid, Im scottish, we dont call it trick or treating here. I too live in a crappy area and I dont like opening my door at the best of times. So I dont. I have my buzzer on silent, or I go to the gym.
Its as hard work as you make it for yourself. If you arent in, no one can give you any grief.0 -
Hi all, I wonder how many feel the same way I do. I HATE Halloween. I love the idea of a spooky day and what not, but I really hate strangers knocking on my door. Usually OH is there, but this time he is working till 8.30 p.m. so I'm going to be home alone for the whole evening.
We live in a pretty crappy area. Last Halloween, we were both home and took turns to go to the door, and the kids were right little sh*ts, asking them to please take one, they'd grab a handful, teenagers who'd spent 50p on a mask turning up at the house in gangs and trying to mug me of the bowl with all the sweeties in, parents swearing at me for not allowing them enough, being threatened that our house would be egged for not giving good enough sweets, generally pretty horrible.
I absolutely hated it and it made me feel pretty scared in my own home. I've asked around and nobody is available for me to go to their house on Halloween, nor come over, so I'm stuck at home alone. I'm feeling pretty terrified to be honest, but what do I do? I could turn all the lights out and pretend not to be home, but then I'm literally a prisoner in my own house. I could have the lights on like normal, but chances are our house would get egged for refusing to open the door (our next door neighbour got egged because they were home but didn't open up by one of the teenage gangs).
I really hate it and don't know what to do. Help
Lights off, put the bin in front of ur door and stick a film on loud!

My mum used to have a real thing about trick or treating being begging and never took us but did let us have parties. then as we got a little older we went to friends Halloween parties too & at some we'd go out treat or treating at the start. Me & my sister just hid the sweets!
Then one year it was like she forgot she had objections and let us go, and then started buying sweets herself to give out to kids! I don't know why she changed her mind but it was great having a happy mum & not a grumpy one about it!
I'll let my future kids go but only with me if they're young and just to select houses. And when they are older I'll expect that I've brought them up well enough that if they want to do it they'll do it nicely.
Aileth you sound like you live in a very scary place!0 -

That, and put up an image of a police officer next to it.0
