Depending on what sort of 'foodies' your dad and OH are - think of the crumbs in the car!

Go for things that can easily be popped whole into the mouth - thereby avoiding spillages down the tops or over the seats (Naturally I'm basing this on the clumsiness of my own family!)

I'd be on the lines of cooked cocktail sausages, mini pork pies, cherry tomatos, pitta pockets, small cakes - Kipling size for ease of time! Drink wise - not classy - but I always find the 'pouch' drinks - can't remember what they are called - are fantastic. Placed in fridge over night they keep their cool really well (Probably as they are foil lined), also help to keep the picnic cool too.

Drumsticks can be cooked in advance, so can a pizza and sliced up to be eaten cool. Fruit wise - I'd go for a fruit salad already made up, easier than trying to peel a satsuma when sat in the car.

Bread sticks and dips, Cut up pittas and pate/houmous.

    etc etc

Hope they have a fab time. DH is there on Saturday with work - couldn't get the sunday! He's gutted!! We live not far from the circuit, so shall spend Sunday listening to the engines. Enjoy!

For me it would have to be brown bread, nice butter, a smear of cream cheese and smoked salmon. They can be cut into cubes just right to pop into my (oh sorry, your dad and oh's) waiting mouths! Just talking about it is making my mouth water......:p

I need to make a posh picnic for 10 with under £40. Not a lot of cheese or fish. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks!

    Hi Petetidball

can't think of any immediate suggestions for the main courses but heavenleigh posted a gorgeous recipe for potato salad on here a couple of days ago that seemed really economical but looked that little bit special. Don't know how to post a link to it but I'm sure you could find it easy enough....it was posted on 10th July

    good luck

cous-cous and savoury rices are cheap and very tasycold , plus they can be made in advance
A cooked chicken can go a long way and be used for a variety of things.
Even though it is a posh picnic dont forget simple things things like a cheese board, fresh fruit and berries, home baked bread or baguettes.
Home made quiches can be 'poshed up' by putting in ingredients you cant buy on the super market shelves.
Melon and parma ham is a favourite.
Salads always go down well and can be done pretty cheaply.

    Just another quick thought,
Some pretty standard picnic food can be made to look like posh nosh.
Save some of the budget to spend on presentation, or make your own, i always want to eat food more if presented to me nicely xx

Chicken drumsticks marinaded in herbs and lemon, homemade hummus and baba ghanoush, cupcakes, stripey jellies made in plastic cups, homemade samosas. Jamie Oliver does a fantastic picnic bread which is baked with whole eggs, ham and herbs stuffed into it and looks stunning. Fruit kebabs can aso look great.
  • As previous posters said, presentation makes cheap things look posh, so with that in mind, here's a few ideas I have seen:

Pinwheel sandwiches - very thin slices of bread, cut off crust, bash with rolling pin, spread thinly with colourful spreads (eg avocado, tinned salmon..) roll up like a swiss roll and slice into thin rounds.

Cold soup. eg gazpacho, cucumber and yoghurt soup, fruit soup etc. Serve in shallow cups with a pretty garnish.

Extend the entree by making it into a salad. Add any mixture of fruit, veg and rice/pasta with dressing. My fave recipe includes chicken, green grapes and raw courgettes. Sounds disgusting but it's actually delicious.

    Mozzarella, cherrytoms and avocado kebabs.

    Home-made baby pizzas

Have a nice time and I hope the weather stays nice.
