zafiro1984 - I have been having a read about beechnuts and found this site that I originally checked years ago :-

I oven roast them, but I must warn you that numerous people online say they are toxic.

Thanks Dannie, I'll have a good read before I decide to what to do. One use I have for beech is - I glycerine the leaves in the spring especially the copper beach variety. I use them in a fireplace over the summer together with other flowers or plants - they make quite a handsome display and its cheap to do.

I picked a load of blackberries to freeze, they are quite large and juicy this year - it must be all the rain we've had. The haws on the rose hedge are looking ready so I need to pick some as I usually make rosehip and orange jelly/marmalade, it's a bit fiddly but quite delicious.

    IN:- blackberries
OUT:- 2 pork chops, 2 pieces steak, 4 sausages - we had a barbecue tonight. All salad and other things from fridge and cupboards.

    Thanks for your message zafiro1984.

    23 - 26th August update -

Keep using up my freezer drawer of previously homemade recipes. One of the freezer drawers today seemed easier to open and shut!

Acquired another food spend day recently on cupboard ingredients. Some were from a local "cheaply priced" Cash and Carry whereas the others were delivered to me (50% off).

No (food) spend days = 21/26.

Yesterday I picked 620 grams of (free) blackberries and didn't purchase anything from the shop on the way home. Consequently, the blackberries were put into the freezer and at the same time, all drawers were reorganised into categories. Apart from that task, a jar of peanut butter used up. One more left that has been stored for quite awhile.

No (food) spend days = 22/27.

Only small bits from food "stores" being used up. Did a lot of gardening so keep collecting salad items.

I want to go another couple of days before I venture out to the shops. I'm sure I could mange if there was a siege but it's more to do with: I'm a bit fed up with what's in the freezer and need to get a bit creative. I've enough veg thanks to the veg plot but I'm low on fruit and we eat an awful lot of that.

Lunch: lamb sandwiches for DH, cucumber salad with mint jelly for me.
Dinner: something already cooked and portioned up maybe turkey or venison, potatoes out of store, veg from plot and possibly blackberries with something (I've no cream or yogurt left). I'll see how it all goes and hope motivation comes back.

    29/8/17 update -

Yesterday was another day of collecting salad greens from the garden. Used up my homegrown raw blackcurrants and yoghurt that had been opened to its maximum day. Also, somebody offered to pick up any groceries for me from shops that are too far afield for me. Only got two store cupboard items that were cheaper than my local/online grocery delivery site. Frequented the local charity shop which is near one of my local shops. Purchased two reductions which will slow down a little what still needs using up!

Pretty hard to eat out of freezer and cupboards at the moment as both freezers and food cupboard are all full and we're desperately trying to eat our fresh garden crops as I pick them. We have some sort of freezer inventory and have decided the only way forward is menu planning although taking products like minced beef and home made tomato pur!e out of the freezer only to convert them into batch portions of spag Bol or Chile con carne sauce which need to go back into the freezer rather defeats the object!:rotfl:
