Quick update. I left the handbrake off last night and this morning no bang. I'll leave it off today at work and see what happens. Thanks for all the replies so far.

It's sticking so a simple adjustment or backing off the adjuster a bit is all that is needed they work on a ratchet and can over adjust.

The shoes may require some emery cloth like sandpaper to clean them up.

It's a common problem you have identified it now the easy bit have it fixed.:D
