Wow, they still make cars with drum brakes?
It did sound like a drum brake issue, but I was thinking they couldn't possibly have drums on a car as new as a C2, surely. Maybe little internal drums for the handbrake which is what mine has.0 -

The C2 is ten years old now, although I think the more powerful ones VTR/VTS had rear disc brakes.
I've seen couple year old Fiestas with drum brakes.0 -
Shows how much attention I pay to modern runabout type cars. I thought drum brakes stopped being a thing in the mid 90s.
Definitely going with the sticky brake option in this case. The rear brakes double up as the handbrake, handbrake never releases and then when the driver finally uses the brake properly, that frees it.
Test as per my post at the end of the last page, i.e. leaving the handbrake off overnight.0 -
"I thought drum brakes stopped being a thing in the mid 90s."
Toyota Yaris, Mk 2 to 2011, drums on the rear wheels.
The Mk 3 also has drums except for the Hybrid versions.0 -
Yeah, I get the point already :P
It's been a long time since I've been looking to buy an ordinary day to day car for anything other than banger money, so really not paid attention to the Yaris, C2 etc.0 -
I still get the !!!!!! moment when I catch sight of a cassette player in a car, even though I can't remember they last time I changed a CD in mine.0

If it is the brakes sticking is it an easy fix? What would I be looking at money wise?0

They are sticking on when you use the handbrake. The noise you hear is the brakes releasing so there may not actually be a problem other than them getting on a bit.
You could get them checked by a garage (not Kwik Fit/Halfords/any other national chain) if you want to see if there is anything to do to but I doubt it's going to be expensive, could be they just need a quick clean up with a wire brush. Ask around friends/relatives/colleagues for a good small trustworthy garage local to you.0 -
if it was persistent going over bumps I would have said a rear bush's or a strut top mount.
as it only happening on cold start, and coming off the drive first thing in the mornings, I would hedge a bet and say you handbrake cable link on the calipers/drums are sticking on.0
