If you ever learn what as TV is and follow documentaries such as police interceptors you will know about things like these, but their again anyone on MSE think they know the law. this has even been mentioned on Watchdog

So you're not basing this on legal facts but on "police interceptors". Interesting argument. That's me put in my place :)

I apologise but although I have a TV those aren't the sort of programs I watch.

when its mentioned by several SERVING motorway officers and even on the BBCs flagship CONSUMER Program then i would say its is a fact unless everyone is lying except goater and his lapdogs.

I accept its probably an informal rule that the police follow.

I just don't believe its official legislation and if you google the subject then you will see that many people receive tickets for speeding when they are below this threshold.

We seem to have reversed arguments on this thread where I said police wont enforce parking on pavements in residential areas and you said they would because its the law.

However the police won't enforce speeding on roads if its less than this "Informal rule" which is not actually a law!

    very strange!

Not really. You were making a blanket statement that the police would not enforce a law with no reference to the severity of the infringement.

Others are saying that a the police very sensibly allow (but are not obliged to) a little leeway with a law that we know they enforce.

As someone said, "apples and lemons". Comparing a threshold with a blanket refusal to enforce is very poor logic.

Is there really any need to join a thread for no other purpose than to take the mick?

Isn't there an allowable margin of error of up to 10% plus 2mph above the speed limit...
No there is nothing in the speeding laws that say this.
Not really the 'speeding laws' (whatever they are ;) ), but Schedule 2 of The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 1996 does prescribe:
    19 Speedometers

    1. The vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer capable of indicating speed in mph at all speeds mph. up the maximum design speed of the vehicle.

    2. For all true speeds up to the maximum design speed of the vehicle, the true speed shall not exceed the indicated speed.

    3. For all true speeds of between 25 mph and 70 mph (or the maximum design speed if lower), the difference between the indicated speed and the true speed shall not exceed—

    V / 10 + 6.25mph

    where
V=the true speed of the vehicle in mph.

their is a lot of rules/legislation that are left to the officers on the ground to use their own judgement to what action to take.

just like below are scenarios that can happen, but are left to the officer to what option they give

    1) you drive on motorway lets say 75 MPH and have full control of vehicle. You may get picked up by handheld speed camera at being over the speed limit and get pulled over and just get a warning

    2) you drive on motorway lets say 75 MPH and have full control of vehicle. You may get picked up by handheld speed camera at being over the speed limit and get pulled over and get a fixed penalty fine and 3 points

    3) you drive on motorway lets say 75 MPH and have full control of vehicle. You may get picked up by handheld speed camera at being over the speed limit and get pulled over and get a fixed penalty fine and an order to attend a driver awareness course

    4) you drive on motorway lets say 75 MPH and weaving in and out of traffic in a dangerous manor. You may get picked up by handheld speed camera at being over the speed limit and get pulled over and get a fixed penalty fine and an order to attend a driver awareness course

    5) you drive on motorway lets say 75 MPH and weaving in and out of traffic in a dangerous manor. You may get picked up by handheld speed camera at being over the speed limit and get pulled over and get arrested for dangerous driving
