I doubt that the police could prosecute someone for driving at 71 (in a 70 area). The margin of error is so small that it would be all but impossible to prove beyond reasonable doubt.
As such, Goater is using an 'apples and oranges' technique to try and cloud the argument. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

you would if anything get a fixed penalty unless you are doing over 85MPH and then you have to attend court.
but even motorway police say if everyone on a motorway stayed within the speed limit then their would be more accidents and more tailbacks. It all comes down to how you are controlling the vehicle at the speed.0 -

I'm no clouding the argument at all. I'm just disagreeing with some of your more ill thought out statements.
For instance you said
"That doesn't alter the fact that your stated view is that it is OK to ignore laws that do not appear to be being enforced. Which is the sort of attitude I expect from a drooling chav rather than a respected poster on MSE. "
Therefore by your argument anyone that disobeys the speeding laws by driving at 71MPH on a motorway is a drooling chav. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Seems to me that all you are doing is putting your own (slightly weird) interpretation on what I wrote and then insisting that is what I meant.
You can take what I wrote to mean either that the police will, under some circumstances, enforce the particular law or that the they will always and under all circumstances enforce it.
One is a perfectly sensible (and correct) interpretation, the other is so ludicrous as to be laughable. And yet you are trying to insist that the ludicrous interpretation is the one intended.
On the bright side (for you, anyway), at least Goater seems to agree with you.
I don't think that just because you're losing an argument with another poster means I have to be brought in as a reason why his argument is wrong!
It makes your argument weak when instead of debating his points you just dismiss it by implying that because I agree with him he must be wrong.
It's very below the belt, especially as you know I'm on a final warning and can't respond in kind! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
yes their is allowances set out, but it is upto the officer on the ground if they use these allowances.Isn't there an allowable margin of error of up to 10% plus 2mph above the speed limit...
just like they have the option to give a fixed penalty with points on your licence or a fixed penalty and enrol you on a driver awareness course0 -

No there is nothing in the speeding laws that say this. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

You like your laws earthstorm. Can you point to the legislation that sets out this 10% allowance + 2MPH?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Anybody know if there's a law against speeding on the pavement?:D
It's legal to drive over it for means of access. But look at this case (if Street View isn't clear - go to the end of Crathie Road until you see the junstion and then look right). To get from drive to nearest dropped kerb and join the main road, you'd have to go a long way along the pavement (and I've seen it happen as I walked by).I need to think of something new here...0 -

If you ever learn what as TV is and follow documentaries such as police interceptors you will know about things like these, but their again anyone on MSE think they know the law. this has even been mentioned on Watchdog0
