No you don't, you can order it from their website and I assume book an installation date at the same time :)

I know they are planning on developing the hive continuously but would be surprised if they were launching something while planning on replacing it.
You're very naive if you think manufacturers don't do exactly this...
  • I made my HIVE purchase online and an appointment for installation was booked immediately. I was then contacted by British Gas and it was agreed that instead of sending out a basic Electrician that they would instead send out a fully qualified British Gas engineer - who was also a qualified electrician. This would mean a delay of over a week. Who turned up? Yes. An electrician - not a qualified engineer as promised. He did not even have the correct technical support number to gain advice, nor could he find the serial number on a brand new, common model Worcester boiler without confusion. I am furious. My money disappeared from my account immediately, however. No delay or confusion there!!!

Home Heating Automation is generating a lot of interest at the moment. Different systems come with different pros and cons. Well worth looking for reviews such as this:

    http://www.trustedreviews.com/british-gas-hive-active-heating-review-2#tr-review-summary

and user comments below the review.

FWiW, my automated system of choice comes with a HW Kit which controls my HW in the range 50 to 60C (this range can be user adjusted). Looking back over the past 6 months, my weekly gas bill (HW and hob cooking) has fallen by 20% per week as the boiler is no longer kicking in each time HW is used.

Warning!!!!! The Hive system has no boost control for the heating so even though Bg have marketed this product as lowering your gas bills, it probably won't, it will keep running until you remember to turn the temp down yourself if you turn it on in between schedules. I have the hive installed & only when I activated my account did I realise there is huge huge forum with disappointed customers on there (over 1600) requesting boost function. However you are only ever going to see this forum once you actually have the Hive installed - too late. Bg have been claiming for over a year that they are working on it (yes I know, what a joke!), I wish the thread had been on a public site to make customers aware of what they are letting themselves in for.

Consider the Evohome controller and HW kit which does everything that Hive does and more. Slightly more expensive - yes, but you have the option of adding wireless TRVs to some/all of your rooms as and when you can afford to do so. Everything can be controlled remotely and you are not restricted to two periods a day and, yes, you can boost your HW. FWiW, my heating has been on for about a month and our daily gas bill (for heating, HW and hob cooking) is averaging at £1.90 per day (incl SC and VAT) for a 5 bed property. How? Zoning means that we only heat the rooms that we are using; the rest are fully frost protected.

Imo BG's huge marketing budget for Hive is sucking people into a product that isn't anywhere near the best in class. If you REALLY look into the smart thermostat market in detail (I have) you will come to the conclusion (like I did) that these all on/all off 'smart' thermostats are basically just replicating the inherent drwabacks in your existing system. Zoning is the way to go if you are really serious about making your home heating more efficient. I mean, do you have just the one light for all your house? Of course not. Once you have used a zoning system like Evohome/Heat Genius you realise that products like Hive/Tado/Nest etc are rudimentary in comparison, no matter how 'cool' they look and how 'glossy' the ads are,

Our daily gas bill since fitting Evohome is bizarrely exactly the same as Hengus's. Granted, having downsized we now live in a 2 bed bungalow so a smaller property but have 3 people (and 2 dogs!) at home and that includes 2 showers and a bath each day (shower fed by combi bolier). We could never go back to a all on/all off system now...

Hello folks hope this is the correct forum if not please move , I'm thinking of getting this installed as it is a wireless thermostat ,and controls hot water and heating through the internet , has anyone got experience of this or is their an alternative ? I looks like a great idea but costs £199 to install ! Many thanks for any help on this matter

I've installed another system, called Heat Genius, which is zoned, they do have an offer for the installation for only £79, (it used to be free installation, that was really good, a friend of mine had it at the time) the thing is the system its self might cost you a bit more the an average heating controller.

Apparently this is because it's zoned and it learns occupancy patterns. Plus, you get 2 year warranty and full support when needed.

I've installed it in my house as well, I've done it myself, it doesn't take more than 3 hours or so.

Also, if you have a hot water tank, you can control that too.

I say, have a look at them, see if it will work for you.
