Hey Meter Man, do u work 4 BG and got some insider info?

I am a meter fitter for BG. I am not about to blab about what I recently learned, it was behind closed doors to all Smart Energy Experts.

It may be 20 years away, but smart meters are the start to all of this.

Check out a video on youtube, search 'smarter living british gas'
(wont let me post link due to being a nooby)

This is of course centered around British Gas, however if the government pulled their finger out and sorted out the smart meter mess across suppliers, then the possibilities would be so much more.

It seems reasonable VFM when compared to something like a wifi system from Heatmiser.
Just a shame my boiler is too old to really benefit :(

if I had kids that turned it on to 30 then this device is not what I need, i would need to educate them.

the timer is there for turning it on in the morning.

if i go away for a few days, it just turn it off as I leave.

If i had elderly relatives that were hot / cold if they are living on their own im sure the can turn on the heating themselves rather than calling me to ask me to use my phone to turn up the heating. ridiculous.

    it

I don't think anything anyone can say on this forum will change your mind, but last year we went away for 7 days in december, I did what you did and just turned off the central heating and hotwater for the week and never thought about it. However, when I can back the cold spell had caused the pipes to burst and I had a major flood! Now I have the hive system installed if the temperature gets anywhere near freezing, it automatically kicks in and brings the house temp back to a minimal level which would stop this kind of thing happening.
I only wish I'd had it sooner.

Looks as though the publicity campaign is under way - a half-page advert in today's 'i' newspaper.

It is still £199 with free installation and still represents reasonable VFM.

My wireless thermostat control does that and it was installed over 11 years ago.

It also monitors the temperature and learns how long it takes to warm the rooms, so when you set it to come on, at say 20 degrees at 6am, it knows what time to switch on so the room is at 20 degrees at 6am.

I personally think, from what I've seen so far, that it is a bit of a gimmick just aimed at the sort of person who feels they need to micromanage every aspect of their lives through their mobile phone. ;).

Like I say, just my personal opinion and if people want it then fair enough.

It's worth remembering there are other internet controlled thermostats available:

    For example: https://www.inspirehomeautomation.co.uk/thermostat.php

Simple to fit and £125 :)
    Thanks

  • I'm thinking of getting this.

I have a holiday let apartment and I have two issues that I think this addresses:

    1) The boiler is in a cupboard that I want to keep all the spare stuff in for the flat (sheets, washing up liquid, bottles of Champagne for Welcome pack, etc).

Presently the only way to change the time the heating comes on is to open the cupboard and change the timer on the boiler.

A wireless thermostat would be a welcome addition and means I can keep this cupboard locked.

    2) If I have a guest coming at 3pm I'd like the house to be nice and warm when they arrive. It will give a bad first impression if they walk in and its freezing.

At the moment I have to drive over there an hour before and turn the heating on. Then either drive back to work, and go back again to greet them or hang around at the flat for an hour waiting for it to heat up and then greet the guests.

Also, I want to be able to reset the boiler after they leave without having to go down there and manually turn it off.

It might be empty for a few days between guests so there's no point heating it then.

I'm looking at alternatives too to make sure the British Gas offering is the best. My plumber friend said "This is the only time you'll hear me recommend BG, but in this case use them".

    All the best

Our thermostat in the hallway can be programmed in 2 hour slots and I'm a stay at home mum ATM so wouldn't benefit us. Not saying it wouldn't in the future though I guess everyone's situation is different though so it depends on many things

I think you're missing the point with the elderly relative example - a lot of older people will sit and freeze because they don't want to spend money putting their heating on. With this technology you can see what temperature their house is at all times. If I checked and my nan was sitting in a 10 deg house i'd be concerned! A lot of older people also get their heating controls wrong, they get confused with timers, especially if they are different to their 20 year old programmers they had before, and sometimes maybe they just don't look after themselves properly.

I have it, I love it. You can also control your hot water, for those who didn't know.
