  • why on earth would you want this? i would rather just turn the heating on and off constant or turn down the thermostat when I come and go.

if you depend on this then the odd days when it fails will cost you.

my house takes 10-15 min to start to warm up, would rather it gradually warms up than go from freezing outside to a hot home.

Well you might want it because you have kids who turn it on to 30 degrees after you have gone to work, you may have irregular hours and want to turn it on when u wake in bed, or in the bath, or in a meeting in your home office etc etc, or you may have elderly relatives who you cant get over to at the drop of a hat who say they are hot / cold etc, you may get called away on business and want it turned off for a couple of days.
Myriad of reasons why you might want it and equally some why you wouldn't.

if I had kids that turned it on to 30 then this device is not what I need, i would need to educate them.

the timer is there for turning it on in the morning.

if i go away for a few days, it just turn it off as I leave.

If i had elderly relatives that were hot / cold if they are living on their own im sure the can turn on the heating themselves rather than calling me to ask me to use my phone to turn up the heating. ridiculous.

I'm having it installed as we have a multi fuel stove fitted in living room which has the thermostat in . So we need to move that to another place and pricing up wireless thermostats and fitting etc plus changing a mechanical timer which is rubbish ,I might as well go for this and have a lot more control of my heating and hot water I hope that is a good enough reason for it ?

And how do you turn it back on so it's nice and warm for your arrival?

Granted, it's not a necessity but it is certainly a good idea and very useful for some people.

Programmable thermostats, where you can set different temperatures for different times of day sound great, but do you really need it to be controlled through the internet?

I don't have a thermostat at all at the moment and would quite like an internet one, as a gadget :D but I dont really think it is necessary unless you often forget to come home and want to turn the heating off remotely!

You can get programmable ones that are wired to the heating system for less than a hundred quid, not sure on installation costs though. Wireless ones seem to be a bit more.

You can get a good quality seven day programmable stat delivered for one third of that price and if you can wire a plug, installation is very easy with only two wires to connect.

i'll just turn it on when i get home, i can wait 10-15 mins for it to gradually warm up. otherwise I would have to pull in somewhere park my car, hope there is a decent 3g signal and try to use my phone.

its interesting and may have some uses, but really british gas are overselling it.

so my gran is going to use the phone to call me up to say the heating is too hold / cold rather than just go and change the theme stat herself?

seriously that is such a stupid argument. no one wants to be at home and reliant on using the telephone to call someone else to change the heating temp. if the thermostat is not accessible just move it or get a wireless.

It's not an argument. You asked who would want it and I gave you examples I see day in and day out. The fact it is not beneficial to you doesn't automatically mean the same can be said of everyone.
