I've been Money Tipped! Debt-free and Proud!
Morning Cathy :) How are you doing? I hope the car is running nicely for you?
I am feeling a bit better today, and am having a nice relaxing Sunday. Truth be told, the whole weekend has been sat in the sofa!

I will be looking for a new DVD player today (i think i said on my savings diary that mine broke yesterday?), so will be checking out https://www.hotukdeals.com for any good deals.

hi WantToBeSE, yes, car is all better (apart from needing a good clean). Hope you find a dvd player that is a good deal and that suits.

I got a new quote from the roofer yesterday to redo the guttering ... it's over a grand, which is a little dismaying, but it will need to be done at some point. When I bought the house the guttering was in places held together by packaging tape. It actually still does the job but it's not what you'd call ideal.

I'll get a couple of other quotes to compare, suspect they won't be all that different though.

The car is going in for a service next week, which again may not be cheap, and its top needs replacing - it is a Smart convertible, 10 years old now, and the plastic back window has developed cracks, which unfortunately can't be replaced on its own. So that's another big expense coming up. Not absolutely urgent but will have to be done.

Despite all that, I'm feeling quite positive about the savings plan for this year. :)

You do know there are ways to watch DVDs on your TV w/o a dvd player? Have you got a USB slot on the back? Does your laptop play them? Have you got a games console?

They say if you can make 3 weeks of any change it just gets easier and easier after that.

Why don't you pop a link to your diary up - things move so quickly round here
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine
  • I am going with that 3 week change and it becomes habit. Back to exercise tomorrow, had a slow year of it so far. Savings have taken a hit already aswel but should still be ending this month on £1,600 ish. Great start and if I can times that by 12 il be smashing last years total of £15,000. Need a couple of frugal months now and stop going out so much. Looking forward to light nights again so can put in another hour or twos work a day to help push on with these saving goals.

As ever, atush has the level-headed response. Yes you can, and you can get a very handy HDMI cable that runs from your laptop to your telly. I bought one myself and it works a treat. It costs about a tenner, WantToBeSE - much cheaper than buying a dvd player.

    Good stuff, YoungBusinessman :)

I've started in with the exercise again but not nearly enough of it so far.

    It is insprational.

Congratulations on your good fortune, and I hope it was not through a loved one's misfortune.

If the sum is substantial enough, you won't need to actually scrimp and save, but you do need to learn the virtues of thrift and responsibility; of living to a budget, of making your money work for you, of not frittering it away on impulse buys.
Don't get me wrong, if you want something, then if you can afford it from your budget for such things (not from your total fortune), and you really want it, get it.

Meantime, start a spending diary, and find out what those spendthrift ways are costing you, and where the money is going.

Sadly it was - the death of my father in 2012. I'd rather be in debt and have him back but that's not going to happen. I owe it to him to invest it wisely so I can leave the same to my kids.

I am at a point now where I am earning a good wage and should surely be able to live well on it. But it's so easy to buy this book on my kindle or that song on itunes!

When I get paid on Friday, I am going to work out a weekly budget and then draw that amount out in cash and darn well stick to it. I do sometimes wish I had someone who would take control of these things for me and be firm with me - but 13 years single and I have no-one to answer to but myself. And I don't always listen!
