Barclays - Contactless card on new account

Options
Am asking this for my brother.

He's recently applied for a Barclays Bank Account online and was given his sort-code and account-number there and then.

After phoning and speaking to an advisor, they have said he should go into branch and talk to them if he requires a contactless card.

Why have they not issued a contactless card straight away? Is this due to credit scoring? (His credit report is fine, but low salary).

Thanks.

Contactless cards are nothing to do with credit scoring it's basically down to what current account you've got with that particular company.

In a nutshell a basic cash card account wouldn't be contactless

He's got just the standard Barclays Bank Account, not the cash card one. Scrolling through their site, it does say 'Subject to status' next to Contactless Debit Card, so am guessing there is some criteria he hasn't met somewhere, or the customer service rep has got it wrong. He hasn't received a card yet.
  • Contactless cards - crazy idea IMO. It gets knicked and the thief goes on a shopping spree :(

If he's got a proper current account then there's no reason why a contactless wouldn't be issued.

Should the OP's brother get the standard debit card then it will be contactless. Only the more restricted online version isn't.

They can go mad at Starbucks etc to the tune of £20 a few times before it asks for the PIN...

Agree just think how many Big Macs they'd get with £20.

That is not totally true with barclays bank. their contact less debit card is subject to status because its an offline card.

If its contactless it will start with 4659, barclays issue my OH with their full bank account with cheque , overdraft and £100 reserve but the card start with 4658 and not contactless, when we try and challenge them they ask her to try back in six month sbecause she is new to their bank

If they are uncertain about giving you an overdraft, they'll also be uncertain about giving you a contactless card.

They have said before that sometimes they prefer to see how you run your account before swapping your card for a contactless version.

The application didn't ask about an overdraft. The email received afterwards just stated "If you wish to apply for an overdraft you can do this by phone, online through Online Banking or in branch (all applications are subject to status)".

I have a basic account with Barclays and when opening it they gave me an option of either a cash card, normal debit card or a contactless card so I doubt that is the issue especially if he has a normal account.
It might just be a case of it being the default option if he wasn't asked at the time of opening the account as it was done online, if he wants one it might be worth just going in and asking.
