So what's the point of them ?

e-cigs release only the vapor of nicotine, then dont pump nicotine into your body like normal cigs

Ok I smoke for my sins. Have tried to stop lots of times so please do not judge.

I know for me a need a cigarette more if I am stressed. My OH also runs a hotel which is non-smoking.

He does not smoke and can always tell if I have had a cigarette even if it was hours ago.

I hate to say it but I think that your friend in a moment of weakness perhaps?

That said and done I think that the way the person handled it was completely wrong. If what you say and I have no reason to doubt is completely true. Firstly they should never enter your room on their own. For your protection and theirs, there are a lot of strange people out there. Also even if they could smell smoke and even if there was a lighter which your friend would not of needed with a e-cig they could of been much more diplomatic.

There are ways to deal with situations like this without insulting guest.

    Wrong.

Definitely complain. The person you saw will be some form of night audit / duty manager who sorry to say while they have a hard job, drunks, party goers etc is by no means top of the managerial chain.

Complain. I bet whom ever s hotel private or independent would not be happy to hear the way in which this was handled.

As I said the smoking or non-smoking is a separate issue it is the way they handled it that is wrong.
Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A

I am also a non smoker, but do sell these e-cigs, yes they give off smoke and odour, then only thing they dont give out is nicotine. some places still class using these as smoking.

Also as other say what was the lighter for if no one was smoking.

You sell them yet you don't appear to know anything about what you are actually selling.
They do not give off smoke but they do give off vapour, and the majority of they do contain nicotine.

There are talks aimed at getting e-cigs classed as a medicinal product, which hopefully will lead to sellers understanding the products that they are selling.

    ???

With normal cigarettes, the nicotine is drawn into your lungs and absorbed into the bloodstream.
With e-cigs, nicotine vapour is drawn into your lungs and absorbed into the bloodstream.
The only difference being that e-cigs don't have burning tobacco, tar and many other substances.
E-cigarettes comprise a battery, atomiser and a cartridge containing nicotine, suspended in a solution of propylene glycol (the stuff from which theatrical smoke is made). When the user inhales, the solution is vaporised (hence “vaping”), delivering a nicotine hit to the lungs without the tar and toxins that would come from conventional cigarettes

Ok, I am an ex smoker and as such can smell cig smoke on someone from a long way off. I can tell if someone has smoked in a room - it stinks. I cannot tell if someone has been vaping and can only vaguely smell it if it is a flavoured liquid. There is virtually no smell and no lingering smokiness. Someone smoking an e-cig would be undetectable in a hotel room unless someone was watching. Therefore I think OP is being lied to by their 'friend'.

Unless the friend had one drink too many and tried to actually light the e-cig. (hence the reason for the ciggie lighter being in the room!)

E-fags are a heating coil which vaporises propylene glycol (usually), nicotine, water and flavours. Most of the 'smoke' is actually steam, with a teensy bit of burnt propylene glycol. PG is what is used in nightclub smoke machines, and has very low odour in itself (it's a sugar). Almost all the smell from efags is down to additive flavours (none from water or trace amounts of nicotine) - and they really hardly smell at all. If you go in a room where one was used 5 seconds before, you'd never know - the steam has dissipated, the smell is certainly less than the aroma of a typical travelodge room.

e-fags have zero tar, plenty of nicotine, and many funky flavours. Are they safer than real fags - almost without doubt, but it hasn't been proved one way or the other in randomised trials over lifetimes etc. Do they smell less? Absolutely.
  • I'm a non-smoker, but knowing a couple of smokers, the smell sticks to their clothes. Whenever I have been to one particular friend's house, I have to change my own clothes and shower as soon as I get home, as the smell transfers from her furniture to me. The smell may be because the friend is a heavy smoker.

As for the lighter, well, most smokers presumably carry one. It isn't beyond the realms of possibility that the friend had a lighter in their pocket and took it out because that was more comfortable than it pressing against their thigh whilst they relaxed in the hotel room. If the friend is male, I would imagine that it is likely that a lighter is often kept in a trouser pocket, whereas a female might put it into her handbag.

Having said that, it does sound possible that one of the friends had a quick cigarette when the OP was out of the room.
