  • Hi
Currently I use Paypal as my main means of transferring money abroad but there are a lot of people who dont have paypal. It means therefore either sending cash or using the english banking system. The problem here though is the flat £8 or £12 charged by the clearers for them to process the lengthy form they require me to fill in with the third party details.

Is there a way that I can transfer money directly from a UK bank account to Europe say?

    Your suggestions will be appreciated.
  • Hi, I am looking for a solution to the same problem. If it is helpful, I know that Thompson Exchange does transfer high quantities of money but qhen I asked for a quote, they told me I had to send them photocopies of all my personal documents in order to get it so I pretty much gave up with them... I don't want to send any documents just to get a quote...

I use then to transfer money from my uk account to my australian account no problems whatsoever. WE generally get a very good deal as well.

A little bit of paperwork to set up initally but then, simple as!

For regualr or frequnet payments to the same account, £5 a pop and wholesale exchange rates you can't beat Bank of Scotland TAPS system (it's what the UK Govt uses to pay pensions overseas and is available to 35 countries. You have to bank with the Halifax or Bank of Scotland though).

Much more info on TAPS and overseas transfers is here: don't reinvent the wheel!

(it's flagged "corporate" all over, but if you bank with HBoS you can use the facility. I have for years to send money to step-children overseas).

I think their fone number is 0141 228 4196/7 but I haven't had to call them for quite a while.
  • Ive tried the banks in the past but they just dont seem to give decent rates to the you unless you're sending huge sums and even then I wouldnt say they are any good.

Ive tried xetrade who werent bad but have sent the last few transfers to the US through transfermate.com . Seemed helpful and their rates were better than xetrade
  • Hi
We are about to buy a small property in Austria but not sure of best way to transfer money to pay for the land first and then the house later - and not lose out rates of exchange etc.Could anyone offer any advice?
Also can anyone recommend a bank in Austria who we can internet bank with or a UK bank that has links there? I have contacted A & L, HSBC - who I though were worldwide, NatWest, Lloyds, Royal Bank but not any help with European banking so far.
    Many thanks
    Avvy
  • For transfering the money , your best option is probably to use a currency broker. See http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/overseas-money-transfers for more info.
Can't help with a bank recommendation.

You can purchase at a fixed rate today for exchange in the future but excange rates are always a gamble, try http://www.hifx.co.uk/ .

I am very surprised you cannot find a suitable bank in Austria. Most (if not all?) those you mentioned operate internationaly and you can open an account on line very easily, e.g. see http://www.rbsint.com/

However IMHO you might be better opening an account with an Austian bank who has a branch near to your chosen location. e.g. http://www.db.com/austria/

I am wanting to transfer regular small amounts fo money from my uk bank account to a french bank account i have and would like to do this via paypal ( i'm told this is a cheap way to transfer small amounts overseas ) I would like to ask what is the best way for me to do this if it is possible . My french bank is not linked to my paypal account i looked on the website and couldn't find the section which lets you attach/add an overseas account to your paypal account .
