It is only the countries that have signed up to the Euro that it applies. Happily the UK is not one.
Neither is Sweden a member of the Euro-Zone, they nevertheless have agreed to the free cross-border transactions.

As of January next year, to be completed by 2011, SEPA, the Single European Payment Area will get introduced in steps. This will include all members of the EEA (European Economic Area) and Switzerland.

By January 2011 there should be no more boundaries for the transfer of money within the continent of Europe, regardless whether a country is in or out of the Euro-zone.

I'll check if HSBC still do Worldpay service, mentioned in following 2 very old articles, nobody has ever mentioned this service to me.

Found this for HSBC, but seems to be targetted at foreigners:

    Low cost International Money Transfers
Sending money back to family and friends is something that is important to you. Choose from two international money transfer options:

    WorldPay
For payments of up to £2,000 in local currency.
    Best for non–urgent payments.
Only available for payments to: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

    Found following regarding Lloyds TSB:
    http://www.lloydstsb.com/travel/international_payment_services.asp
    http://www.lloydstsb.com/travel/international_payment_charges.asp
    Economy International Moneymover
The charge is £10. Payment amounts are restricted to pre-defined value limits depending upon the country of destination. The details required to make an Economy International Moneymover are very specific and are individual to each country. For more information, please contact your local branch.

HSBC are awful with international money transfers. They even charge you a minimum of £8 to ACCEPT money into your account! (so 4 times more than it cost to send it in the first place from Denmark!)

Last transfer I did, I did to an account with Nationwide, they don't charge you for accepting money.

Very sorry I can't help you with anything other than HSBC for sending money abroad, and I can see you've already found their prices.

I queried it once (since I can do online transfers "the other way" with no problems), and they said that they have to do the transfers by hand because it decreases the chance of money laundering

You definitely can have more than one paypal account at one address because we're seven people living in my house and we all have paypal accounts. You just need different email addresses.

However, you'll need to link your French bank account to one of your Paypal accounts. I don't know for sure but I'm guessing you need the Paypal account to be set up as a French Payal account in order to be able to do this, and then you WILL need to have it registered to a French address. When you set up a paypal account the first question you're asked is what country you're in, and then when you go to fill out the address it'll have the country name already filled in as the last line of the address.

So the short answer is no you can't register them under the same address, one of them has to be registered as French.
  • Is it possible for you to send a cheque?

Checked with HSBC & First Direct.

HSBC still do cheaper non-priority Worldpay service at £9 for transfer.
First Direct do not do cheap service, their lowest price is £21 for transfer.

I use Moneybookers http://www.moneybookers.com/app/ & it costs next to nothing (€0.50) - has always been trouble-free & gives a commercial rate of exchange.

    Hope that helps.
