I use Moneybookers http://www.moneybookers.com/app/ & it costs next to nothing (€0.50) - has always been trouble-free & gives a commercial rate of exchange.
Can you send money to a bank account ??

Thanks Grumbler for your tip re. Nationwide. I also have one of their Flex Accounts, but as I am the one who will be permanently living overseas, I won't be able to keep this account open. If my ex husbands opens a Flexaccount with Nationwide, and we use the 2 card approach, I am worried that the bank will query the frequent and regular withdrawals made in Austria.

I'd check that out. I belong to a French forum and many people living permanently in France use a Nationwide flex account.

A bank transfer or Western Union.

Most banks won't deal with an International payment over the Internet.

BACS transfer from your account to thiers is the safest way.

You can use Western Union or Paypal

Citibank will allow for 'fee free' transfers between citibank accounts online, internationally. It may be worth having a look at https://www.citibank.co.uk

Moneygram works in exactly the same way as Western Union, but is marginally cheaper. Still an expensive method though.

Easy peasy = go to your bank and fill out the appropriate form  Make sure to ask for all charges at source and a quote, this will avoid heavy charges from the recipient bank, these can be quite high.

If you have the correct numbers, some banks (like CAM) will allow international BACS transfer on line :T
