Building Society - Roll/Reference Number

Hi, I'm in need of some urgent help.
I had to pay a deposit today, and the payee provided me with an account number a sortcode and a roll/reference number. From the account / sort code I think it is Leeds building society they bank with.
Anyway, I made the payment through Natwest and it asked for the sort code and account number. I didn't realise I had to put the roll number in the reference bit on Natwest.
The payment is showing as processed, but where will it go without the roll/reference number for that person ?
Hope this makes sense ?

It will go into the building society's own bank account as per the payment details sent. Until they are advised of the roll number they will not be able to apply it from there to their own customer's account.0

If I phoned the payees building society would I be able to tell them I made a payment but missed the roll number off, so they can add it on ?
Or will I have to get the payment reversed first ?0 -
You are probably best speaking to the intended payee and ask them if they can speak to their building society passing on details of the amount, date and timing sent, details re your account the money was sent from and confirming the details of the sort code and account the money was sent to. This is because the building society probably would not co-operate with you direct.0

Yes that should do fine.0 -
Yes that should do fine.
And if the payee has not received the payment providing her with time of payment, my sort code etc... should be enough for her to get it sorted out ?0 -

What you're relying on (and I can't help here because I don't currently bank with Leeds BS) is that the roll number is a relic of years gone by and not currently used to assign funds, ie all customers have a unique account number.
However, if the account number is a collection account (and you can perhaps get some help on their website re this) - and the roll number is indeed required - then I'd expect the money to be bounced back in a few days.0 -

So the best thing to do in this case is speak to the payee, provide them with the payment details and ask them to speak to their building society directly to see if they can sort the roll number out0 -

But probably best to let the payee try first (or indeed wait a few days before contacting NatWest).0 -
Have you had comfirmation from the recipient that the payment has not been received.
The Halifax used to use roll numbers and funds always found there way via the account number and sort code with out the roll number as the reference.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0
