Leeds Building Society (formerly Leeds & Holbeck) use collection accounts with HSBC. Sort codes beginning 40.
I work for a very small bank, and we also have our collection account with HSBC.
Some times, when payments come in, and don't quote our customers account number, we are able to work out who the payment belongs too by using just the name that has been quoted. But our customers aren't individuals, they are churches and charities.
If we can't work out who the payment is intended for, if it's come in by faster payment, we'd send it straight back to the originating bank. If it's been received by Uk Chaps or from abroad, we tend to hang on to it for a few days to see if anyone claims it.
