Have you had comfirmation from the recipient that the payment has not been received.

The Halifax used to use roll numbers and funds always found there way via the account number and sort code with out the roll number as the reference.
    Only after about 1990.

    Hi,

Not had confirmation yet. With Halifax, were the account number and sort code for everyone the same when they used the roll numbers ?

Are you asking purely out of interest?...because whether the answer is yes or no*, it isn't going to help you. :)

I wasn't with them in the early days of roll numbers, but certainly in recent times (as per o4u's post above) the account numbers were unique to the account holders (rendering the use of such roll numbers pointless for payment instructions).

I'm not sure I was thinking back from what I remembered.

Personally I think your asking the wrong people just do the sensible and ask the person if they have received the funds.

As you may be worrying about nothing!

Was your payment sent to this sort code and account number 40 27 15 - 12440040? Or 086119 XXXXXXXX?

Halifax current accounts had sort code and account number and roll numbers , the sort code and account number are unique to the account holder and that is all you need

Savings accounts eg ex Leeds Permanent may use a collection account and require the reference number to allocate funds to the particular account

enter the sort code and account number into a search engine - collection accounts will yield more results than personal accounts

Also , we suspect that it is Leeds Permanent Building Society (now part of Halifax)- the one with the Arthur Daley adverts rather than Leeds Building Society (formally Leeds and Holbeck Building Society)

These are likely to have a sort code starting with 11

After 1990 all Halifax savings accounts were given a unique sort code and account number combination. From 1996 all Leeds Perm Building Society accounts were given unique sort code and account number combinations, together with a a Halifax roll number commencing 2/6xxxxxxxxx-x.

In the case of Halifax it was still possible to fund an account via a Barclays collection account. I recall the account number as being 00000000 with the savings account roll number being needed in a reference field if this was used.

Leeds PBS had a similar set up using Lloyds TSB. I think Halifax / Leeds PBS roll numbers were finally killed off by Lloyds in 2011. I'd be surprised if any payments are received via a collecting account these days within Halifax.

I think my AA accounts use a Barclays collecting account today though.

If it's a passbook account then the recipient isn't going to know whether the payment has arrived or not without going into the bank to get it updated - or at least phoning them

What you're relying on (and I can't help here because I don't currently bank with Leeds BS) is that the roll number is a relic of years gone by and not currently used to assign funds, ie all customers have a unique account number.

In many occasions the roll number is the Building Society's account number, withouit it the money will be sitting in an suspense account at the society.

Leeds Building Society (formerly Leeds & Holbeck) use collection accounts with HSBC. Sort codes beginning 40.
