I was just thinking about this yesterday, I have normaly had a letter by now to invite me in for my flu jab but no sign of it yet.
I am now in 2 at risk groups so I would have thought that I might be further up the list but apparently not :o

Maybe it takes a while to build up an immunity to flu dont think its gives a cast iron guarantee though, all I can say it I definitely dont get many colds now I use to get one after other

It takes up to two weeks to be at its fullest for protection against flu which is why you need to get it before flu takes hold in the community.

Just contact your surgery. Mine doesn't contact me and neither did my last. They may contact others such as over 65s but I don't know.

  • The flu vaccination does not give you the flu.

Actually it can ! Most vaccinations work by giving you a controlled mild dose of the illness it is going to protect you against, this causes the body to react to protect itself from this illness. In a very few cases the vaccination can trigger a full scale response - so you then have 'flu !

Suggest you read up on where the term "vaccination" comes from !!

I suggest you stop spreading wrong information.

The flu vaccine is made of dead/inactive virus which doesn't give you flu at all.

Sorry, you're wrong and TQ's right. The flu vaccine is dead/inactive and can't give you flu.

"Can a flu shot give you the flu?
No, a flu shot cannot cause flu illness. The influenza viruses contained in a flu shot are inactivated (killed), which means they cannot cause infection. Flu vaccine manufacturers kill the viruses used in the vaccine during the process of making vaccine, and batches of flu vaccine are tested to make sure they are safe."

  • You can get flu after you have had the flu jab. But it is not caused by the flu jab.

Flu virus mutates all the time and if you happen to pick up a mutation that your particular flu vaccine hasn't covered, then you can suffer from that flu. But you will not get any of the strains of flu that your vaccine covers.

So therefore you stand much less chance of getting any sort of flu.

    Hope this helps :)

(Also, colds are not related to flu and having the flu vaccine will not stop you getting a cold).

You can even get the strain of flu that the vaccine covers as it isn't 100% protective. However it isn't the vaccine that causes it. :)

...and, AFAIK, you won't have it as badly as if you had not had the vaccine.

In any event, whatever you had probably wasn't flu. Under normal circumstances no GP will actually diagnose flu, as that requires swabs and lab tests taking several days, by which time you will have recovered anyway.

The most they will do is say it was 'probably' flu/cold/whatever and prescribe medication to deal with the symptoms.
