Let's see pensions for one. I've had jobs where I've been threatened, but I got minimum wage for that privilege. Teachers are certainly not hard done by, they are very lucky. Not many can say they get the money and holiday that teachers get and I don't know many people who even get a pension.

Anyone can have a pension, they just have to pay for it. I know people from all sorts of jobs that have a pension and others from same job that don't because they would rather spend the cash now.

Exactly they get more money, more holidays and more benefits then a lot of other people. They should be grateful instead of being so greedy.

It's this attitude that's fuelling the current race to the bottom in pay, pensions and working conditions.

Instead of all the petty jealousy against people who get paid more than "a lot of other people" why not fight for a country where all workers receive a fair wage and decent pensions and working conditions?

And public sector pensions, once common in the private sector as well, are not free.
  • Its funny, so far, nobody has written the 'My wife's a teacher, goes to work at 5am, marks books until 3am and spends entire holidays preparing lessons'

Lets face it, Teachers work a short day, a short year and have massive holiday entitlement.

If you work from 9-3 daily with 17 or so weeks off a year, this is part time working for a full time wage so please teachers, just stop moaning.

Add the actual hours worked in a year and you'll find that teachers receive, pro rata, a very good wage.

Could you imagine anybody in private industry moaning at such benefits????

Teachers should accept that they are actually doing rather well.

I'm not a teacher but if you think that teachers only work 9-3 then you really need to go back to school! Whether or not they do work in the holidays (and most do) nobody has 17 weeks' holiday, even on paper.

My friends a maths teacher. He worked long hours for his first year but now he just reuses lesson plans so doesn't really work long hours at all. He's home most days for 4pm. He does his marking on the train too and from work and says its an easy life.

Like everything you can make teaching appear strenuous, but the reality is its a pretty easy career and you do get long holidays.

Suppose it all depends on what you teach.

If he is home by 4pm and has to take a train home his school must finish very early, or a very short train ride. But it must be long enough to do his marking. I smell a rat.

It's a 30 minute train ride. He finishes at 3.

You have to remember that teachers don't teach constantly during the day. They get free periods where they can also do some marking.

He's very laid back about his job.

He's actually ended up marrying one of his ex pupils which we all think is a bit weird...

High school then, totally different beast to those in first schools.

And yes it is a bit weird but not un heard of especially if she was a pupil when he had just started teaching so the age gap not that much.

State education has had a kicking from Central Gov all my adult life (33 years and counting). The current government are behaving no different from all their predecessors. For example every Summer the cry is that exams are too easy. So the current ploy is to move the goalposts mid game. Its very strange and odd behaviour. Makes me wonder if we have turned into a nation of children haters.
