I don't believe you're being asked to though and is teaching unique in a job that can't be done by a 75 yo?
Do you watch Educating Yorkshire?
It is not just about standing in front of a class and disseminating information. It is about discipline, class management, coping with bolshy parents, and much more. It requires a tad more intensity than stacking shelves in B&Q. I don't believe many 75 year olds would cope or that most parents would want their kids taught by someone of that age.0 -

As you've already said you're not a teacher but a lecturer I don't see how you can be qualified to comment on what its life.
Although Educating Yorkshire is an entertaining program its only a carefully edited snapshop of what Teaching is like and they've obviously only shown the "exciting" bits.
Its very snobbish to imply that a 75 year old is only good for stacking shelves in B&Q!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I am a school governor, the mother of a teacher, have worked in schools, and I still work in education, albeit tertiary, so forgive me but I do think I am slightly qualified to comment;)
I wasn't implying that a 75 year old was "only good for" stacking shelves, rather that it was less demanding. Are you really contending that it would be a good thing to be teaching at 75?0 -

Why couldnt someone at 75 teach? its hardly physically demanding, so if they were all there ontop i dont see what the issue would be?
I wouldnt slag teachers off as we couldnt function without them, however i wouldnt make out as if they hard done by either, the friends i have who are teachers, start later than me, finish earlier than me, and have more holidays than Santa, and are all paid a decent salary for what they do, so cant understand why so many seem to always be complaining about it!!0 -

1) - School governor gives you no indication of how hard teachers work as its in a teachers vested interest for a school governor to think they work hard,
2) - Being the mother of a teacher means nothing. You yourself are not a teacher so the fact you are related to one does not give you a special insight
3) - Worked in schools - doesn't sound like you were a teacher in schools so again you don't really know
4) - You work in education but not as a teacher so again doesn't make you qualified to comment.
5) - A 75 year old could easily be a teacher. Its very narrow minded that you think only certain ages can teachThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

For all the reasons given above.
Really, have you ever stood in front of a class of 30 baying teenagers?0 -

I have actually on 2 occasions had to present to teenage classes at schools, granted it was for career days so they may have been on best behaviour, however i would still maintain your age shouldnt be a factor.
Some people may not be upto managing a class of kids, however that is as true at the age of 45 as it is at 75, IMO your age wont affect this as it would if you were perhaps a joiner, brickie etc.0 -

There may be the odd person who at 75 was up to it, but in general all our faculties are on the decline by then and teaching is a mentally demanding job.0
